Story
Valorous Heart. Our Martyred Lady. Bloody Rose. These names of Adepta Sororitas orders are famed across the galaxy, as are the Battle Sisters who serve the emperor's will. To die in the name of the God-Emperor of Mankind is to live eternal, and none are more willing to bleed in his name than the Adepta Sororitas - the Sisters of Battle. The Book of Martyrs charts the deaths of these exemplars.

Three tales of Martyrdom
Reviewed: 22-01-24
It's a very different style of story to the usual 40k books, so it follows events in a way where it's building to the victory within the loss.
The first story was my favourite of the three but they all create an equally enthralling picture of the faith of the Adepta Sororitas.

The world is uninhabited, but must be protected to prevent the tyranid advance threatening several nearby systems. The situation goes from bad to worse when Cain and the Catachans run into a force of insidious xenos, and the two factions are thrown into a temporary alliance purely to survive.

A different take on Ciaphas Cain
Reviewed: 26-03-22
This version of Cain is read very differently to the main books. Personally I find it a less appealing take, or perhaps more cynically, a miscast. Toby Longworth is a brilliant narrator, but Cain played as an uptight Commissar doesn't appeal when he already exists as a more aloof and sardonic character.

Great journey
Reviewed: 21-06-21
I enjoyed the journey the book took but the last stretch feels rushed compared to the rest of it. It sets up a rich world and takes you through it at a smooth pacing. Then the end feels like it wants to set up the sequel rather than round out what happens and tie things up.

Story
Of all the Emperor’s immortal sons, the primarchs, it is Konrad Curze whose legend is the darkest. Born in the shadows of Nostramo, a world of murderers, thieves and worse, is it any surprise that he became the figure of dread known only as the Night Haunter? Heed now the tragic story of the creature Konrad Curze, master of the Night Lords Legion, of how he became a monster and a weapon of terror. He who once served the Imperium saw the truth in a maddening universe and the hypocrisy of a loveless father, and embraced the only thing that made any sense - darkness.

Konrad Curze's madness is front and center throughout the book. Having the irrational rationalized though sheer force of will and indomitable bullishness of the mad Primarch is mesmerising.

Story
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel of the Roaring Twenties is beloved by generations of readers and stands as his crowning work. This new audio edition, authorized by the Fitzgerald estate, is narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal ( Brokeback Mountain). Gyllenhaal's performance is a faithful delivery in the voice of Nick Carraway, the Midwesterner turned New York bond salesman, who rents a small house next door to the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby. There, he has a firsthand view of Gatsby’s lavish West Egg parties - and of his undying love....

It's a very easy listen but it's aged in that the descriptions of people aren't racist or sexist as such judging by the intent it's trying to convey but it's still jarring to hear it.

Interesting but poorly paced story
Reviewed: 17-07-18
It was an interesting story but the constant switching of locations and conversations made it feel disjointed. This was made worse by conversations sounding like they'd continue after a short breath but would just cut to another scene instead. On top of that the gaps of silence between chapters felt especially egregious.
The voice acting from the leads was quite good but enough characters to be noticeable weren't, especially the kids.

Story
Recipient of the 1966 Tanizaki Prize, it has been called Endo's supreme achievement" and "one of the twentieth century's finest novels". Considered controversial ever since its first publication, it tackles the thorniest religious issues of belief and faith head on. A novel of historical fiction, it is the story of a Jesuit missionary sent to seventeenth century Japan, who endured persecution that followed the defeat of the Shimabara Rebellion.

Found this very heavy-going for the first half, the second half grew on me immensely. It's not a frivelous read so it's something best left for when you're in the right mindset to really take in what's going on.
