Story
British writer Butler has crafted a grim tale that unsuccessfully blends murder with social commentary. In 1946, newly promoted detective-constable John Coffin arrives in Greenwich to take up his post. Soon after, the body of a young woman floats down the Thames to South London. It quickly becomes clear that this is no ordinary murder: the victim has been strangled, stabbed and mutilated.

I ignored negative reviews on accents, narration or predictable story. I really enjoyed this and looked forward to driving along being entertained by another Joy Ellis tale. No problem listening, the narrator was absolutely fine by me.

Story
It could be your average suicide. A man found dead in his car, engine running, parked at the end of a lonely track, a tube feeding deadly fumes from the exhaust through the window. Except for the seven-year-old boy still breathing in the boot. For Jonathan Kellaway, the past is somewhere he chooses not to go. Dead friends, lost lovers and a family dynasty hell-bent on self- destruction lie buried there.

Story
Jo told him the phone call had been about a woman who wanted to have her husband declared dead. Smith thought for a moment and then said, 'Hmm. There must be a few million women in this country who feel like that. I take it her husband's been missing for a while and she's decided it's time to move on. In the absence of a body, which is always a nuisance, she wants Diver and Diver to confirm there's no proof he's alive. And I've told Jason a dozen times I'm not getting involved in anything matrimonial. I have enough trouble sorting out my own relationships.'

Excellent storytelling and thoroughly enjoyable. Narrated by the perfect person for these books and the main character DC Smith.

I enjoy every book by Joy Ellis, if you want to drive and listen (which is what I do) or just listen to a book with good characters and an unusual story then this is the book for you. The characters are good souls,
it’s a decent plot that’s a great listen, far from bland but makes no demands. I’m happy to recommend this book.
