An intriguing listen

This was an unexpected pleasure. It's not much of a murder mystery but it's a tale well told, full of interest and intrigue. There's a lot of storytelling so it comes over very well as an audiobook. The background of the middle ages is brought to life, as are the extraordinary gang of characters. Thoroughly recommended

This book is far removed from a thriller or whodunit - the murder plot is a tiny incidental which is never solved. Instead it is an overlong overdetailed account of historical events leading up to the second world war through the eyes of fantasy individuals. I found the first part which dealt in depth with Nazi anti semitism in Vienna sickening, and I would have chosen a book about the Holocaust not a relaxing who dun it if I wanted that. The rest isn't so disgusting but it's not more interesting. One to miss.

A fascinating listen. It starts gentle and entices you with the story of a small town at its origins, then just as you are drawn into the characters the vice starts to turn and the darkness underneath comes out. Three times you learn to like people then learn to fear for their lives. Three times the social history of America at the grass roots is exposed. Well worth listening to.

Rich and intruiging

This book works well in audio with an easily distinguished cast of characters and the narrator dealing better with the spanish than I did when reading books by the same author. It's a multilayered plot which also deals with the reactions of the police and their entourage, and the politics of post 911 Europe. I have read a previous story where several of the characters appear but a new reader would have no problems following as their prior history is well explained. Makes for fascinating comparisons between modern Spain and the UK. A rich and enjoyable read.

Story
Life was a bed of roses for Patrick Aldermann when Great Aunt Florence collapsed in her rose-bed and he inherited Rosemont House with its splendid gardens. But when his boos, 'Dandy' Dick Elgood, suggested to Peter Pascoe that Aldermann was a murderer, then retracted the accusation, the inspector was left with a thorny problem. Though by then a police cadet had dug up some very interesting information about Patrick's elegant wife.

I've read a number of the Reginald Hill books and found them more interesting and more demanding than the TV series - more enjoyable too. This audio book is very good. Nothing is lost as the format is unabridged, allowing chapter toppings of quotations etc to be included. The reading with the acted voices is excellent. Sometimes it demands a level of concentration which you wouldn't need with a book where you can always flick back a few pages to check a detail. Definitely a positive recommendation for this version.
