Story
It all happens so quickly. One day you're living the dream, commuting to work by riverbus with your charismatic neighbour Kit in the seat beside you. The next, Kit hasn't turned up for the boat and his wife, Melia, has reported him missing. When you get off at your stop, the police are waiting. Another passenger saw you and Kit arguing on the boat home the night before, and the police say that you had a reason to want him dead. You protest. You and Kit are friends - ask Melia, she'll vouch for you.

Pretty good.
Reviewed: 03-03-23
I enjoyed the book. I didn't hear a single swallow or gulp from the narrator as many readers have mentioned.
There were a few plot-holes and I could see the twist coming a mile off, but the characters were good and the story quick and well paced.
A solid 7/10

Awful. Have to agree with all the other reviewers
Reviewed: 12-02-23
I love the Cormoran Strike series of books, but this one I am returning only 25% read.
The endless chatroom dialogue just doesn't lend itself well to plot progression. There are 10 or more characters in each chat room and you know nothing about them, not even gender. It is completely impossible to build a character for any of them in your mind.
Less of a 'who dunnit?' and more of a 'who the hell is chatting now?'
I give up.

This story really allows the reader to travel back to the time depicted with all its hope, and prejudice. You are completely immersed. It is so well written and beautifully crafted. The narrator brings it to life. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Story
Kris Marshall and Katherine Jakeways star as Mr & Mrs Pepys in this BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of the world famous diaries. Samuel Pepys was 26 when he decided to start keeping a diary, in January 1660. For the next 10 years he faithfully recorded the day's events and confessed his innermost thoughts. That diary has since become one of our most important, and fascinating, historical documents. Pepys gave us eyewitness accounts of some of the great events of the 17th century, including the Great Fire of London and the Second Dutch War.

Great Abbreviated version that keeps the pace
Reviewed: 26-07-21
I had always wanted to read this, but was put off by the sheer volume of it. Also, the reviews always said that it was interesting but tedious in the way that diaries are. Got up, had eggs for breakfast, went to work, etc
Now I know this version is highly abbreviated, but it really felt like it captured the highlights. It is also dramatised so his accounts of the conversations have been fleshed out into real scripts with the other actors.
It felt like a well paced story/play. For the really interesting historical context, (The great fire of London. The Restoration, The plague, etc) I was able to pause and research the details so it made it even more fascinating. Also, where I felt it was too redacted, I looked up the actual chapters of the diary online and read the whole days entry.
Probably too abbreviated for some people, who perhaps want more of the historical context and detail, but it was a really fun listen.

Story
An elderly woman of striking beauty is found murdered in Orleans, France. Her identity has been cleverly erased, but the method of her death is very specific: she has been killed in the manner of traitors to the Resistance in World War Two. Tracking down her murderer leads police inspector Inès Picaut back to 1940s France, where the men and women of the Resistance were engaged in a desperate fight for survival against the Nazi invaders.

I literally 'lost the plot'
Reviewed: 30-06-21
It starts wonderfully, with loads of intrigue and action, but then gets lost in its own convoluted meanderings.
Loved the shift between the present day and WWII, but trying to keep track of all the characters and who was betraying who was almost impossible. There are maybe 10 major characters, most with pseudonyms. The writer switches back and forth between 1st names, last names and spy names.
I stuck it out, but honestly, if any of them had been the mole at that point, it would have been plausible, therefore not a particularly satisfying ending.
Amazing performance from the narrators.

An amazing book. If you liked 'The Martian' you will love this. It is full of the same themes, a deeply rounded and developed character faced with a series of scientific problems that he methodically and cleverly overcomes....AAAAANNND a huge twist!
I feel bereft as I just finished it....
Andy Weir's second book Artemis was disappointing... This, however, really delivers.

The most 2 dimensional characters ever
Reviewed: 28-02-21
I have made it through 6 chapters and every time a new character is introduced I groan. Without giving too much away: there's the alcoholic abusive mother, the moustached shouty Sergeant Major, the insouciant foppish public schoolboy Second Lieutenant... It's like Windsor Davies from It Ain't Half Hot Mum meets Hugh Laurie from Blackadder...
The story seems fairly good and is moving at a good pace..but I can't take it anymore.
The narrator is a bit irritating too. He sounds like he's reading the news, big dramatic pauses and 'announcing' every detail.
I love zombie fiction..but not this one.
