Five German schoolgirls are missing. Four have been found dead. But unlike the undesirables who make up the majority of dead and missing people in Hitler's Berlin, these girls were blonde and blue-eyed - the Aryan flower of German maidenhood - and their gruesome deaths recall ritual killings.

I would highly recommend this book as a possible introduction to the Bernie Gunther series. The plot, characters and delivery keeps you wanting the next episode constantly. One of the very very few books I’ve considered immediately re-reading.

"I didn't realize how much I would miss grocery shopping until it was gone." Life was pretty good. The love of Alice's life had proposed, they were proud new homeowners, and she'd just landed a great promotion at work. Things were going to plan. Well, they were, until the Red Death struck. Billions dead in a matter of weeks. The survivors are few and far between. No one is safe. Life will never be the same again.

Interesting take but lacking in dynamism.

Much of this book is an enjoyable and believable story. I’ve had a penchant for post apocalyptic stories since my teenage years, but they are all too often directed at American gun loving survivalist nut jobs and I find that quite boring and frankly dangerous. So I was pleasantly surprised to find a non gun worshipping female lead and an Australian setting. But the story moved a little too slowly for me and the ravages of a post pandemic world were only slowly coming to light as the book ended. Despite this I’d happily buy into book number two!

Story
No one noticed when capitalism died. Perhaps we were too distracted by the implosion of global finance, or the rise of populism, or the demise of the planet - or all of those cute cats on Instagram. But gradually, quietly, a yet more exploitative new system has taken hold: techno-feudalism. Crafted in the form of a letter to his late father, who first taught him about the power of new technologies to shape human history, Yanis Varoufakis explains how Big Tech has effected an invisible but fundamental transformation in all our lives.

My name is Gary Rendell. I'm an astronaut. When they asked me as a kid what I wanted to be when I grew up, I said, "astronaut, please!" I dreamed astronaut, I worked astronaut, I studied astronaut. I got lucky; when a probe exploring the Oort Cloud found a strange alien rock and an international team of scientists was put together to go and look at it, I made the draw. I got even luckier. When disaster hit and our team was split up, scattered through the endless cold tunnels, I somehow survived. Now I'm lost, and alone, and scared, and there's something horrible in here. Lucky me.

Short , impressive, original.

Tchaikovsky is an original and impressive writer. His performance as a reader was quite good in that he is using his own voice for his own story but I couldn’t help the feeling that a professional actor was losing out and despite him having lived in Scotland his Scottish accent was somewhat ‘cringy’.

Few images more shocked the French population during the Occupation than the photograph of Marshal Philippe Pétain - the great French hero of the First World War - shaking the hand of Hitler on 20 October 1940. In the radio speech after this meeting, Pétain said 'It is I alone who will be judged by History.' Five years later, in July 1945, the hour of judegment - if not yet the judgement of History - arrived.

Great general introductory history of Ireland,
Reviewed: 25-04-23
This book is well presented and an enjoyable listen without being heavy handed. Whilst the work gives a good overview of Ireland’s more recent history the historical significance of the famine, it’s causes and the far reaching effects lack detail. As this would seem the most significant factor in recent Irish history a greater emphasis would have been appreciated by this reader at least.

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother's coffin as the world watched in sorrow - and horror. As Diana, Princess of Wales, was laid to rest, billions wondered what the princes must be thinking and feeling - and how their lives would play out from that point on. For Harry, this is that story at last.

Reviewed: 30-01-23
From any perspective Harry Wales has had a life which is interesting and dramatic, he deserves to have his story told and this book is well written and well read. I have listened to the whole book and it is quite devastating at times, he seems like an honest and decent man doing his best to tell his story.

This is the first major biography for a generation of a truly formidable king. Edward I is familiar to millions as 'Longshanks', conqueror of Scotland and nemesis of Sir William Wallace ('Braveheart'). Edward was born to rule England, but believed that it was his right to rule all of Britain. His reign was one of the most dramatic of the entire Middle Ages, leading to war and conquest on an unprecedented scale and leaving a legacy of division that has lasted from his day to our own.
