Boring

The best I can say about it is that it was a freebie as part of Amazon Prime.
High time to call it a day and take up a different hobby! As for Martin Jarvis, there must be dozens of narrators who would do a better job. The best by far is Jonathan Keeble, but he is obviously way too busy.

Not the greatest book I have listened to. I have also bought the next two books in the series. I hope they are better than this one, which I am going to return.

Story
A series of unsolved murders with one thing in common: each of the deaths bears an eerie resemblance to the crimes depicted in classic mystery novels. The deaths lead FBI Agent Gwen Mulvey to mystery bookshop Old Devils. Owner Malcolm Kershaw had once posted online an article titled 'My Eight Favourite Murders,' and there seems to be a deadly link between the deaths and his list - which includes Agatha Christie's The ABC Murders, Patricia Highsmith's Strangers on a Train and Donna Tartt's The Secret History.

Brilliant

I have followed this series for years on the radio, kept looking to see if it was available as an audio book, so was really pleased when it was finally released. The funny thing is that I am sure there were some episodes I had not heard before, impossible I know, as it comes round on the radio at regular intervals.
Love all the episodes, but my favourite has to be Dead Broads Don't Talk. Val really plays up to the various characters Lee and Maria play. Brilliant. Shame the BBC saw fit not to do more than the four series, especially as I am a great fan of Simon Brett. At least I now have those safe and sound on my laptop.

The dead talk. To the right listener, they tell us all about themselves: how they lived, how they died--and who killed them. Val McDermid uncovers the secrets of forensic medicine with groundbreaking research and her own experience. Along the way you’ll wonder at how maggots collected from a corpse can help determine time of death and how a DNA trace a millionth the size of a grain of salt can be used to convict a killer.

I love watching programs such as these on the television, so I thought I would give this book a go. Well it did not disappoint, absolutely brilliant. Well thought out and well written. If I had one complaint it would be the narration. There seemed to be an awful lot pf pauses. No matter, it didn't distract from the quality of the the book and its information.

Not up to standard
Reviewed: 17-11-19
After all the years Felix Francis has been writing I would have expected him to do his research properly. Very early on in the book he proved he had not done so. In Kind Hearts And Coronets it was Dennis Price who murdered eight of his relatives, not Alec Guinness, who played all nine roles. Such a simple thing to check up on, yet Mr Francis did not bother to do so.
Obviously Mr Francis is writing for the US market as many of his terms, sidewalk for instance, are not used here in the UK. There were other anomalies too numerous to mention.
On the whole the plot was poor, the narration also left something to be desired. A very disappointing audio book, which I will be returning.

Predictable

Oh dear, is it me, but I am finding Mr Francis a tad predictable. I had worked out what was going on, and 'who dun it' long before 'our hero' had. As for the last chapter, pity somebody didn't tell me it was an advert for taking a holiday in the Maldives!
Maybe my tastes have changed with the advent of more recent authors. Or maybe horse racing and the American influence that has crept into his books is not what I am looking for these days.
