Story
Pino Lella wants nothing to do with the war or the Nazis. He's a normal Italian teenager - obsessed with music, food, and girls - but his days of innocence are numbered. When his family home in Milan is destroyed by Allied bombs, Pino joins an underground railroad helping Jews escape over the Alps, and falls for Anna, a beautiful widow six years his senior. In an attempt to protect him, Pino's parents force him to enlist as a German soldier - a move they think will keep him out of combat.

The story starts off about one woman and her family. After a few chapters getting to know her and her story, it completely changes - its another family ? the same house and an earlier time but not sure, maybe I wasn't paying attention for a split second. Anyway the first story isn't mentioned again. The other family seems to have no focus but is rather about in depth conversations about politics and flora. Just gave up in the end.

Story
It starts with a lie. The kind we've all told - to a former acquaintance we can't quite place but still, for some reason, feel the need to impress. The story of our life, embellished for the benefit of the happily married lawyer with the kids and the lovely home. And the next thing you know, you're having dinner at their house and accepting an invitation to join them on holiday - swept up in their perfect life, the kind you always dreamed of.... Which turns out to be less than perfect.

Two days later, an American gentleman wakes in a hospital bed with no memory of who he is or how he got there.…

too much gruesome killing
Reviewed: 05-03-17
The premise for all these murders was weak. Lots of unsavoury characters.
The narrator was good except for one of the main characters Mary. Awful Welsh accent and why Welsh? Mary was from a poor working class background living in London.

It was a slow starter and I was not sure that I was going to like it, but the more I listened the more I got into it until I was engrossed. Very good characterisation, the psychology of the main characters was excellent. The readers were superb.

Story
It's hard being that woman, the one whose husband disappeared. He went out five years ago for a pint of milk and never came back. So here I am with a daughter who blames me for everything, a son trying his best to pick up the pieces and a gaggle of neighbours who are incredibly nosy. Then I find a left luggage ticket in the pocket of one of his old coats and suddenly I'm thinking... What if he's not dead? What if he's still out there somewhere?

What could Jonathan Harvey have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
If it did not go on in detail on things that did not develope the storyline. The characters were not likable and in the end |I gave up as it just got boring

What disappointed you about Haunting Stories?
The reader was terrible. She read in such an affected way it was impossible to concentrate on the stories so I can't really comment on them. I am usually very impressed with the quality of readers but the opposite is the case here.
Has Haunting Stories put you off other books in this genre?
No, I'll just avoid anything that is read by her.
What didn’t you like about Cathy Dobson’s performance?
I have already said it all.
Any additional comments?
I don't know how someone so bad was allowed to be a reader.
