Bravery, courage, fear, and love in a time of war. Despite their differences sisters Viann and Isabelle have always been close. Younger, bolder Isabelle lives in Paris while Viann is content with life in the French countryside with her husband, Antoine, and their daughter. But when the Second World War strikes, Antoine is sent off to fight, and Viann finds herself isolated, so Isabelle is sent by their father to help her. As the war progresses, the sisters' relationship and strength are tested.

Story
Celebrating her 45th birthday at her local pub, popular podcaster Alix Summers crosses paths with an unassuming woman called Josie Fair. Josie, it turns out, is also celebrating her 45th birthday. They are, in fact, birthday twins. A few days later, Alix and Josie bump into each other again, this time outside Alix's children's school. Josie has been listening to Alix's podcasts and thinks she might be an interesting subject for her series. She is, she tells Alix, on the cusp of great changes in her life.

Story
Ever since I met my handsome husband Dr Gabe Bonneville, I started playing the role of the perfect housewife. He works hard as a surgeon, so I look after our home, and throw elaborate dinner parties with champagne cocktails for his best friends Hugh and Anita. He’s my safe place and my chance to have the family I’ve always wanted. I’ve managed to hide the mornings when I wake up and see a face in the shadows. I haven’t told Gabe the truth about the woman who raised me, or told him about the therapy I’ve been getting so my secrets stay hidden in the dark.

Great narrator, good story but some plot holes
Reviewed: 01-10-24
Overall really enjoyed this audiobook but I have to say a verbal narration really emphasizes the issues of a text. For example: how come Darcie didn’t recognize Tabitha the first time she saw the therapist? Would a roughened male police officer really know what strawberry blonde looks like and describe a woman with the same eyes as another woman? I also don’t really like how cheesy authors can be sometimes although I am glad this author wasn’t particularly cheesy!

Story

Depressing read with heart-breaking ending
Reviewed: 16-04-24
Narration: I’m a huge fan of the main reader (played in Downton Abbey). All narrators had modulated voices and carried the story well. The accents were lovely - as a non Brit, the Yorkshire accent is my favorite.
Story: absolutely depressing. This is the story of two “tweens” from Yorkshire and the discoveries they make of their neighbors in the 60s or 70s. I thought it would be a bit of a nostalgic read from the author but it is anything but. Makes you glad to live in the 21st century. One lovable character encounters tragedy and I have to admit I was deeply affected by it. I’m glad I finished it but I will not recommend it. If however you are a Northerner and would like to know what your elders went through, you might enjoy it.
