Story
Our universe has been growing for nearly 14 billion years. But almost everything about it, from the elements that forged stars, planets, and lifeforms, to the fundamental forces of physics, can be traced back to what happened in just the first three minutes of its existence. In this book, Nobel Laureate Steven Weinberg describes in wonderful detail what happened in these first three minutes.

A brilliant book but terribly narrated
Reviewed: 14-09-24
Though the content is excellent, unfortunately the narration is poor. In addition there are numerous inexplicable repeats in narration: suddenly it just jumps back several seconds or minutes and repeats.

Story
This was the most popular novel of Radcliffe's time; Radcliffe's portrayal of her heroine's inner life raised the Gothic romance to a new level. The atmosphere of fear and the gripping plot continue to thrill today. This is the story of the orphaned Emily St Aubert, who finds herself separated from the man she loves and confined within the Castle of Udolpho by her aunt's new husband Montoni. Here she must cope with an unwanted suitor, Montoni's threats, and the wild imaginings and terrors which threaten to overwhelm her.

A gripping plot written by a wordsmith

Radcliffe’s prose (though perhaps not her poetry) is superb and makes this a joy to listen to. Furthermore, the plot is absolutely gripping! The pacing is perhaps a little slow at first but the patient listener will be very well rewarded for persevering. The characters (especially Emily) are quite ridiculous but this does no real harm. I highly recommend this tale to anyone with a taste for mystery and beautiful language.

The stories in this collection are abridged.

Beware: the stories in this collection are abridged.
One of the joys of Crompton is her mastery of language; much of this is lost because of the abridging. Additionally, the pace of the plot suffers.
This collection might be appropriate if the intended audience is a young child but adult listeners should beware and the collection should certainly contain the word "ABRIDGED" in the title / description.
