OK but tried to hard
Reviewed: 27-01-17
OK the final quarter was really good and I'm glad I stuck with it but it was just too long and in places self indulgent.
Had it been half as long it would have been a good week paced story.
I also found the random smattering of "big" words unnecessary and totally out of context to the story and the characters.
Should have been better but still glad I listened
Sorry jk

Story
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

How can this be thus good. It is!

From the moment this started I was hooked and just wanted more. It should not work, one man's ramblings, but it does and how...
Without doubt one of the top books I've come across. I don't even like science fiction but then this is not a sci-fi novel. It is the ultimate one man against the odds novel.
The humour is just genius. The narration is brilliant

What can I say that has not been said. It is brilliant but in a hideous way. The fantastic mix of bland lists of clothing, food and technology, from times gone by, with the most grotesque descriptions I have ever heard.
Net result a fantastic and addictive listen.

Story
The hilarious, heartbreaking novel by the author of the international best seller A Man Called Ove. Granny has been telling fairy tales for as long as Elsa can remember. In the beginning they were only to make Elsa go to sleep, to get her to practise Granny's secret language, and a little because Granny is just about as nutty as a granny should be. But lately the stories have another dimension as well. Something Elsa can't quite put her finger on....

Great Story but not quite Ove
Reviewed: 25-09-16
A man called Ove was one of my favourite books for years and this is close but not quite up there. It is a witty and well crafted novel with just enough depth to make it a joy to listen to.
Told through the eyes of a child the story is far from childish and there are enough adult topics explored to challenge the reader.
The constant stream of reveals is brilliant and there were many surprises.
And then I ma told the next book is even better....

The downloadable, digital audiobook edition of Jussi Adler-Olsen’s sensational new thriller, read by the actor Steven Pacey. Two boys, brothers, wake tied and bound in a boathouse by the sea. Their kidnapper has gone, but soon he will return. Their bonds are inescapable. But there is a bottle and tar to seal it. Paper and a splinter for writing; blood for ink. A message begging for help. Great Cop story with pace and humour
Reviewed: 05-09-16
Have read the First 2 books and really enjoyed the characters and wit. I found myself a little disappointed at the start and it took a short while to get back in to the team. Having said the the story grew on me quickly and held my attention well. The humour is more pronounced in this novel and I really enjoyed that.
Well worth a listen and very well read

Story
Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a disgraced rabbi who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master, the husband who commissioned her, dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York in 1899. Ahmad is a djinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Wonderfully descriptive tale that just draws you in from the start. The narration is spell binding, perfect for the story.
For me it was a little long and did want it to up its pace a bit.

Story
The three Theban plays by Sophocles - Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus and Antigone - are one of the great landmarks of Western theatre. They tell the story of Oedipus, King of Thebes, who was destined to suffer a terrible fate - to kill his father, marry his mother, and beget children of the incestuous union. He does this unknowingly but still has to suffer terrible consequences, which also tragically affect the next generation.

Thought I would enjoy as I love audio Drama. This just seemed dated and filled with annoying music and group chanting.
I'm sure it is actually better than I rate it but as I say it did not work for me.
On the plus side i did learn from it and understand the story better

I can;t really say much more than I loved this book and the lead character, with all her flaws, was so appealing.
There were moments of listening when i thought the story was flawed but frankly that did not matter, it made its point.
It finished beautifully but I wanted more, I wanted a share of the good times to come.
Really recommend this one. Give it a go. It is up there as one of my top reads
