Story
What is life? What is my place in it? What choices do these questions obligate me to make? More than a half-century after it burst upon the intellectual scene - with roots that extend to the mid-19th century - Existentialism's quest to answer these most fundamental questions of individual responsibility, morality, and personal freedom, life has continued to exert a profound attraction.

Magnificent overview of an immensely complex topic

Absolutely brilliant lecture series. Such a great, concise overview of existentialism as a movement, with all its conflicts and contexts. As accessible as it could be (and certainly easier than reading Sartre). I came away from it with a better understanding of myself, and a better understanding of key intellectual currents in the 20th Century. I couldn't ask for more.

From the author of Housekeeping, Gilead is the long-hoped-for second novel by one of America's finest writers.
Chosen by the New York Times Book Review as one of the top six novels of 2004.
In 1956, toward the end of Reverend John Ames' life, he begins a letter to his young son, a kind of last testament to his remarkable forebears.

Truly, truly wonderful

Listening to this again after having read it in physical form a few years back. Tim Jerome's performance is phenomenal, truly brings Ames to life. I'd remembered this as a story shot through with wonder, that would help me appreciate the world better. I'd forgotten how sad it is, especially the story of Jack Houghton and how Ames misinterprets him. This whole thing swept me up, and it's fantastically engrossing if you get on its level. Recommended.

Story
Here, Alain de Botton follows the arc of a mental health journey, from crisis to recuperation; the moments we realize we cannot cope; the acts of selfcare or therapy in which we find respite; and the days we finally reclaim a sense of stability. Written with understanding and kindness, it is both a source of companionship in our loneliest moments - whether it's a relationship breakdown, a career setback or anxiety around the everyday - and a practical guide that will help us find reasons for hope.

Found this such a thoughtful, hopeful listen. It's very precise in distilling emotional truth, deeply resonant in its description of how it feels to be in despair and the simple things that can bring life.
I've found this a healing book, one that's lifted me out of a dark time and helped me acknowledge the grounds for hope - and my own need for help.
It's not the full picture, but there are other books that delve more deeply into neuroscience etc... this book is where you should go if you're feeling exhausted and at your limit.
Not everyone will love it, but those who do will realise it quickly. Give the sample a go before you buy it.

Introducing... Hoaxed, the new series from Alexi Mostrous and Tortoise, who brought you Sweet Bobby. In 2014, two children told police a shocking story: that they were being abused by a Satanic cult; a cult headed by their father and by parents and teachers at their school in the wealthy London suburb of Hampstead. The story was a lie. But on the internet, that didn't matter. Hoaxed is an investigation into one of Britain's most serious-ever conspiracy theories. A story about a modern-day Satanic panic; about the victims whose lives were destroyed and about the conspiracists who spread the ...

Gripping, wide ranging, well researched. Tortoise are always good at these things and this is no exception. Really appreciated how Alexei brought together the disparate strands of conspiracy thinking into a deeply satisfying, thoughtful conclusion

Memorable, thoughtful, shocking
Reviewed: 27-07-23
Really enjoying this. At first it seems like it's just a story about a really shocking occurrence, but the makers widen it out into a discussion about how women's pain is minimised and how the justice system works. It's full of fascinating questions but never anything less than gripping. I've gasped in public on more than one occasion. Now waiting eagerly for them to drop the next ep as there's been a break after ep3.

Story
The crime-infested intersection of West Fayette and Monroe Streets is well-known - and cautiously avoided - by most of Baltimore. But this notorious corner's 24-hour open-air drug market provides the economic fuel for a dying neighborhood. David Simon, an award-winning author and crime reporter, and Edward Burns, a 20-year veteran of the urban drug war, tell the chilling story of this desolate crossroad.

Outstanding and unmissable

An absolutely incredible piece of work, a kind of slow motion tragedy: profound, thoughtful, emotionally devastating, beautifully read. What Simon and Burns have crafted here is simply one of the greatest pieces of reportage ever, and it deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Steinbeck's THE GRAPES OF WRATH. These are deep, rich true stories, told with empathy and warmth, and the kind of literary verve that's lacking in a lot of modern non-fiction. I can't recommend it enough: it's honestly one of the best audiobooks I've ever had the pleasure to listen to.
