Story
Ancient Egyptian civilization is so grand our minds sometimes have difficulty adjusting to it. It lasted 3,000 years, longer than any other on the planet. Its Great Pyramid of Cheops was the tallest building in the world until well into the 19th century and remains the only Ancient Wonder still standing. And it was the most technologically advanced of the ancient civilizations, with the medical knowledge that made Egyptian physicians the most famous in the world.

This was informative, engaging and just the most amazing presentation of Ancient Egyptian history. If you accompany it with looking up photographs of the things he is describing it’s even better.
Bob Brier is my new hero!

Story
In an 18th-century England of wit, womanising and powdered wigs, provincial Philip Jettan runs the risk of irreproachability. Cleone Charteris stands in no such danger. The golden-haired, headstrong despair of men, she seeks a husband who can duel and dice with the best of them. So Philip leaves for Paris, where his father's hopes and his lover's ideals are realised, but with unforeseen consequences for them both.... A peerlessly successful and prolific romantic novelist, Georgette Heyer shows in Powder and Patch what won her a wide, devoted audience that continues to this day.

At last, a narrator who realises that this author is funny! Im so grateful! Now can he please read Sprig Muslin? A very humerous story despite some very outdated attitudes.

Love the book, narrator fails.
Reviewed: 29-08-24
This is a brilliantly funny book which has none of that evident in this narration. The narrator has plenty of expression, but it isn’t always appropriate expression and a lot of it is disjointed. Does nobody brief the narrators? So many of them read the books as pretty poor, simple stories when Heyer was full of humour. I’m literally having to find the humour for myself… even when Bouncer is preventing Eleanor from moving! It should be laugh out loud but isn’t. A good actor who should have prepared better.

Great romp of a story
Reviewed: 30-04-24
This is classic Heyer, strong female characters a real variety of people, ridiculous situations and great humour. The narrator is good, but Charity could have done with a nicer voice. I just wish that the narrators realised that these books are funny! Almost all of them read them straight, despite the clearly comic nature of them.

Story
Vernon Alverstoke sees no reason to put himself out for anyone. But when a distant connection asks for help, he is quickly plunged into one drama after another by the disorderly Merriville family. Surprisingly, he finds himself far from bored - especially when he encounters their strong-minded daughter, Frederica. However, she seems far more concerned with her family's welfare than his romantic advances.

The excellent narration really brought out the individual characters in this sparkling story and missed none of the humour of the book.
One of her best, it had me laughing out loud on a number of occasions!
It was easy to forgive the one or two mispronunciations.

Story
Sir Gareth Ludlow never truly recovered from the death of his fiancée. Years later, a chance encounter with Amanda, a young and devastatingly pretty runaway, inspires him to try to do the right thing and to set her on a path towards a good life. But Sir Gareth has been neck-deep in a life of debauchery and hedonism ever since his fiancée's death, and Amanda's startlingly lively imagination proves to be more than he'd bargained for. As they both become increasingly entangled in Sir Gareth's scheme, it seems more and more difficult for either of them to lead the life they should.

This is one of my favourite Georgette Heyer stories. The heroine is brilliantly funny, the narrative full of sparkle and wit.
Unfortunately, the narration is stilted, with some sentences so badly read that the meaning is lost. Certainly there is no real sense of the story here.
I wish that there was some real quality control on Audible. It’s not good enough to just read words. There must be much more to it than that. Please only use narrators who understand the books and actually can convey the humour.

This was always one of my favourite of Heyer’s books and the narration is wonderful. I will listen many times I think.
For those who don’t know it, it’s fun, full of events, lovely characterisations and a read to really lose yourself in when days need lightening.
