Loved learning about a culture I didn’t know anything about. Felt author had carefully researched. It’s a real epic of a story. I would definitely recommend and will be listening to more of her books.

Revisiting the series, listening rather than reading this time I’m reminded how much I love these books. Hearing then narrated with all the different voices just adds to the story telling.

I loved all the different voices Jud and Prudie were excellent. Im revisiting the books after reading them 10 years ago. Listening to them had added to the magic. Grapham writes so beautifully and the characters are so real, you cry with their sorrows.

Very shallow portrayals or shallow characters. The nicest character was calypso and she’s supposed to be the selfish one! Apparently to be free and fun as a woman you have to sleep with literal every male and reject any maternal instinct you have. But the worst part is the excusing of male characters lusting for underaged girls.

Story
It began in a women's club in London on a February afternoon. A discreet advertisement in The Times, addressed to "Those who Appreciate Wistaria and Sunshine..." lures four very different women away from the dismal British weather to San Salvatore, a castle high above a bay on the sunny Italian Riviera. There, the Mediterranean spirit stirs the souls of Mrs Arbuthnot, Mrs Wilkins, Lady Caroline Dester, and Mrs Fisher, and remarkable changes occur.

I loved listening to this book. I had not read the author before and it felt like Jane Austen transported to the 1920s. It was such a touching story made all the more by the beautiful narration. She read it with just the right amount of clipped old fashioned accent but not so much it became a parody. Really recommend

Story
A fascinating account of the world’s most famous disease - polio - told as you have never heard it before. Epidemics of paralysis began to rage in the early 1900s, seemingly out of nowhere. Doctors, parents, and health officials were at a loss to explain why this formerly unheard-of disease began paralyzing so many children. Why did this disease start to become such a horrible problem during the late 1800s? Why did it affect children more often than adults? Why was it originally called teething paralysis by mothers and their doctors?

Great overview of Polio
Reviewed: 28-03-24
Very clear and well researched approach to the history of Polio. It’s so important that it’s true history is known. The use of toxic metals as medical! And the liberal use of pesticides is something we’re not taught. The author does not speculate merely tells what happened in an engaging way.
My only small dislike was the discussion on the change in polio’s diagnostic criteria resulting in a seemingly decline in cases (when in fact it was just being reclassified). The idea of a conspiracy was dismissed out of hand. When in fact with multiple stakeholders it could be both unfortunate timing and intentional deception.

I loved the interactions and different perspectives, all the deep insights. And as always the best bits were being in Strike and Robin’s heads. I think maybe a little more on the seductive side of the cult to make it more convincing that so many would stay but being picky. And Robert Glenister’s narration is superb, it feels like theatre. Thank you both Roberts

Story
Few books have had such an impact as Wild Swans: a popular best seller and a critically acclaimed history of China that opened up the country to the world. Through the story of three generations of women in her own family - the grandmother given to the warlord as a concubine, the Communist mother, and the daughter herself - Jung Chang reveals the epic history of China's 20th century. Breathtaking in its scope, unforgettable in its descriptions, this is a masterpiece that is extraordinary in every way.

Megan Phelps-Roper was raised in the Westboro Baptist Church - the fire-and-brimstone religious sect at once aggressively homophobic and anti-Semitic, rejoiceful for AIDS and natural disasters, and notorious for its picketing the funerals of American soldiers. From her first public protest, aged five, to her instrumental role in spreading the church's invective via social media, her formative years brought their difficulties. But being reviled was not one of them.
