About this listen

WINNER OF THE BRITISH SCIENCE FICTION ASSOCIATION AWARD FOR BEST NON-FICTION
'PEOPLE THINK THAT STORIES ARE SHAPED BY PEOPLE. IN FACT, IT'S THE OTHER WAY AROUND.'
At the time of his death in 2015, award-winning and bestselling author Sir Terry Pratchett was working on his finest story yet - his own.
At six years old, Terry was told by his headteacher that he would never amount to anything. He spent the rest of his life proving that teacher wrong. At sixty-six, Terry had lived a life full of achievements: becoming one of the UK's bestselling writers, winning the Carnegie Medal and being awarded a knighthood for services to literature.
Following his untimely death from Alzheimer's disease, the mantle of completing Terry's memoir was passed to Rob Wilkins, his former assistant, friend and now head of the author's literary estate.
Drawing on his own extensive memories, along with those of Terry's family, friends, fans and colleagues, Rob recounts Terry's extraordinary story - from his early childhood to the literary phenomenon that his Discworld series became; and how he met and coped with the challenges that 'The Embuggerance' of Alzheimer's brought with it.

The best audiobook ever!
Rob Wilkins really brought Terry Pratchett to life for the listener with his incredible narration and writing. I felt that I was in the Chapel with them at times. As he said, Terry is not dead, but alive in his books.

Poignant, but missing something
Fascinating and moving, but somewhat claustrophobic, as it focuses almost solely on Sir TP and the author. We don't really hear anything about how he was seen by others. We learn that Terry was crotchety on tour, but we don't hear how kind he was to his fans, signing not just the books he was touring for, but many of his collection, and I've heard numerous reports of how good he was to them at signings, and how he could give amusing talks extemporaneously. All we seem to get from this book is how he would rage at the absence of a cup of tea. People loved going to his signings and lectures. They loved meeting him. And that speaks to his character as much as his incessant writing and tragic illness.
Hearing especially the reception of the last two books from Rob's perspective is heartbreaking. I remember the reaction from readers who had been eagerly anticipagting another TP novel well, and I remember also that, unlike most situations where you get 1 star reviews, most of the fans knew of TP's illness and mourned his writing. There was a collective sadness rather than blame for a poor novel. I wept when I read most of those reviews.

Thank you rob
Thanks so much for this great book, I happened to be listening to 5live when you were talking about Terry, who I had not heard of before besides hearing his name from time to time, I was so intrigued by what you said about him that I started to read discworld and this book, needless to say I am eternally grateful full to you and Terry.
Footnote
Today I emptied the Oxfam book shop of many of his books, although I prefer audio books I just wanted to have them on my bookshelf
