About this listen

With the epic sweep of Min Jin Lee's Pachinko and Yaa Gyasi's Homegoing and the lyrical beauty of Vaddey Ratner's In the Shadow of the Banyan, The Mountains Sing tells an enveloping, multigenerational tale of the Trần family, set against the backdrop of the Việt Nam War.

Trần Diệu Lan, who was born in 1920, was forced to flee her family farm with her six children during the Land Reform as the Communist government rose in the North. Years later in Hà Nội, her young granddaughter, Hương, comes of age as her parents and uncles head off down the Hồ Chí Minh Trail to fight in a conflict that tore not just her beloved country, but her family apart.

Vivid, gripping, and steeped in the language and traditions of Việt Nam, The Mountains Sing brings to life the human costs of this conflict from the point of view of the Vietnamese people themselves, while showing us the true power of kindness and hope. The Mountains Sing is celebrated Vietnamese poet Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai's first novel in English.

A story of survival

I have been gripped by the story that this family has shared, learning about the effects of the Land Reforms and the Vietnam war. it has been a parallel story of survival against all odds, hate, love, war, running away, family connections/reunions, loss, and healing. The effects of war riddled this family through the generations, leaving them scarred but the determination for freedom and survival kept them going. This story makes me hate war and human greed even more, it made me sad, and I cried at certain points. The author is talented and has conveyed all the emotions and feelings really well, it's like reading a really sad poem. Looking forward to reading more from this author and the stories that she writes.

Beautiful piece of writing.

Fantastic story, although stressful to listen to at times it really captures the tragedy of what happened through Vietnamese history.

An absolute triumph

This is one of the best books I've listened to for a while, beautifully descriptive, this book really engrossed you in the surroundings and the culture. There are many parts that are horrific, but this is necessary to accurately display the brutality of the time. I consumed the book within 3 days and found I learned so much about the culture and history of Vietnam, aside from just the Vietnamese War. I look forward to reading more by Nguyễn.

Beautifully sad story

I really liked this book. It makes me sad to think how hard the life was for our ancestors. I wish we can learn from events like this and history will never repeat itself!
Beautifully written book.

Enchanting

This story is heartbreaking yet written and narrated so beautifully I felt transported in Vietnam through these different eras.
It also emphasized the complexity of war, good Vs bad. Besides it's a great way to learn about the Vietnam war from the perspective of Vietnamese.

Highly recommend

Amazing book...

Similar to the books about the siciliana family Florio and the Bacardi saga in Cuba. If you lived those you'll absolutely love even more this one.

Cried so much.
