About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
We tend to believe that normality equals health. Yet what is the norm in the Western world?
Mental illness is on an unstoppable rise. Some 45 percent of Europeans suffer high blood pressure, and nearly 70 percent of Americans take at least one prescription drug. Illness and trauma are defining how we live.
In his new masterpiece, renowned physician, addiction expert and author Gabor Maté dissects the underlying causes of this malaise—physical and emotional, and connects the dots between our personal suffering and the pressures of modern-day living. Over four decades of clinical experience, Dr Maté has found that the common definition of 'normal' is false: virtually all disease is actually a natural reflection of life in an abnormal culture, as we grow further and further apart from our true selves. But he also shows us the pathway to reconnection and healing.
Filled with stories of people in the grip of illness or in the triumphant wake of recovery, this life-affirming audiobook shows how true health is possible—if we are willing to embrace authenticity above social expectations. The Myth of Normal is Gabor Maté's most ambitious, compassionate and urgent book yet.

Wonderful book but bad performance
It’s a fascinating book but I disliked the performer’s attempts to imitate accents. May buy it as a physical book

Wellbeing, keeping talent, diversity, raising children
I am very happy about this book as it confirms root causes and exposes fake and anti human governments and the regulatory needs for all “successful” businesses.

A book I wish everyone would read
Gabor Maté has done it again with the brilliant book which explores how trauma impacts us all and society as a whole. Learning to understand responses to trauma and allowing the blinkers to fall away means that we can better support ourselves and others but also become advocates for those who don’t yet have a voice.
My only problem with this book was Daniels reading of some of the parts where he was quoting an English person or an Irish woman, he tried to copy the accent and it just sounded forced and jarring. I would have preferred him to use his own voice!

Recommend
I found this book insightful and relevant to trauma work. Other reviewers don’t like ‘accents and the narrator’ well, then audiobook is not for you, go and buy the paper copy! The content and data given by Dr Maté are interesting and clinal cases engaging. Thank you

A book for life
Gabor & Daniel Mate have created an accessible perspective on the multi factorial considerations for wholehearted healing, health and well-being. An essential read for anyone wondering what’s gone so wrong and what can we do to make it better.
