I’ve always admired and enjoyed Amis’s novels for his biting wit and humour. This “novel” or pseudo-autobiography / memoir is on a much more sober level, but is a fitting self-tribute for one of the most enigmatic authors ever. It leaves you with a melancholic impression that he still had so much more to say.

While I appreciate endings that leave it up to the reader to determine what happens, I would have preferred to have just a few more lines to know if Dickie pulled the trigger, and who he might have hit.

Another brilliant, witty novel from Martin Amis, exceptionally well narrated (as usual) by the inimitable Steven Pacey. Sad to think there will be no more of these but even more of a reason to revisit these again in the future.

Sometimes, even epic audio versions of epic novels can be difficult to stay engrossed for such a long time but the masterful writing and invested performance of the narrator make this a masterpiece. Bravo!
