Story
Considering the role of justice in our society and our lives, Michael Sandel reveals how an understanding of philosophy can help to make sense of politics, religion, morality - and our own convictions. Breaking down hotly contested issues - from abortion, euthanasia, and same-sex marriage to patriotism, dissent, and affirmative action - Sandel shows how the biggest questions in our civic life can be broken down and illuminated through reasoned debate.

This should be mandatory reading/listening for everyone. The author is able to put forth arguments of different ideas of justice and also his own conception with very convincing points. The way he brings Aristotle, Kant, Mill and Bentham in modern issues is just beautiful!

Story
In recent decades, market values have crowded out nonmarket norms in almost every aspect of life. Without quite realizing it, Michael Sandel argues, we have drifted from having a market economy to being a market society. In What Money Can't Buy, Sandel examines one of the biggest ethical questions of our time and provokes a debate that's been missing in our market-driven age: What is the proper role of markets in a democratic society, and how can we protect the moral and civic goods that markets do not honour and money cannot buy?

Great but chapters are not numbered correctly

With lots of examples, the author has illustrated the problem of lack of political and moral deliberations and letting the market take all those decisions by default. Very nice read but the only problem is that this version has no sense of chapters and sections.

Story
At midnight on 15 August, 1947, India left the British Empire. This defining moment of world history had been brought about by a handful of people:Jawaharlal Nehru, the fiery Indian prime minister; Mohammed Ali Jinnah, leader of the new nation; and Louis and Edwina Mountbatten, despatched to get Britain out of India. Within hours of the midnight chimes, their dreams of freedom and democracy would turn to chaos, bloodshed and war.

Solid research and a very engaging read

The book tells the story of Indian independence and partition through the intermingled life stories of 5 chief protagonists. What I loved is the ability of the author to weave intricate details, gossips and quirks of these people into the broader chronological narrative.
Accessible to all, it would be really interesting for Indians to compare it with the history of independence taught in our schools.

Meet Imelda and Augustine, or - as our young narrator calls his unusual parents - Em and the Big Hoom. Most of the time, Em smokes endless beedis and sings her way through life. She is the sun around which everyone else orbits. But as enchanting and high-spirited as she can be, when Em's bipolar disorder seizes her she becomes monstrous, sometimes with calamitous consequences for herself and others.

The story, the characters, the subject and the raw emotions are so wonderfully portrayed by the author. The autobiographical biography of his mother/parents deals with mental health, particularly bipolar disorder and does not fail to leave its mark on the readers/listeners. The narrators voice is most suited for this and adds to the experience.

Story
Time is a mystery that does not cease to puzzle us. Philosophers, artists and poets have long explored its meaning while scientists have found that its structure is different from the simple intuition we have of it. From Boltzmann to quantum theory, from Einstein to loop quantum gravity, our understanding of time has been undergoing radical transformations. Time flows at a different speed in different places, the past and the future differ far less than we might think, and the very notion of the present evaporates in the vast universe.

The author tries to grapple with the single most important question - what is time!? And of course there is no answer but the way he puts forth the science and the philosophy involved makes the book so special. I'll have to read /listen again to grasp the complex science and other ideas which even after the author's simplification, remain puzzling for me.

The author has done intensive research, survey of literature and his personal engagement with the subjects of his study are quite impressive. In the first few chapters, it is a bit dragged and slow but then the second half of the book is quite engaging and insightful.
I didn't struggle to finish it but yes I did speed up a bit. The narration is clear and well paced.

Story
Tara Westover and her family grew up preparing for the End of Days but, according to the government, she didn’t exist. She hadn’t been registered for a birth certificate. She had no school records because she’d never set foot in a classroom, and no medical records because her father didn’t believe in hospitals. As she grew older, her father became more radical and her brother more violent. At 16, Tara knew she had to leave home. In doing so she discovered both the transformative power of education, and the price she had to pay for it.

I had no idea about what mormonism was all about before reading the book and it explains the experience of being zealously devout and then questioning the belief with equal fervour.
It is a personal tale of growing up and getting educated which was liberation for the author.
I loved the way in which so many layers and issues are woven by the author in her retelling of the events - religion, parenting, American history, bipolar disorder, health, and so much more.
Overall, a sad story, told beautifully by the author and performed extremely well by the person reading it out. Must read/listen.

Spirituality vs Organised religion
Reviewed: 14-07-20
The author has chosen to tackle a lot of issues related to religion and faith. How different people approach God differently - the good, the bad and the ugly. The characters are relatable and lots of references from literature makes it interesting. However, the story is unable to hold after the half way limit and is somehow tied up at the end. Overall an important book because of the mirror it shows to society but the story could have been more engaging.

The Republic of Gilead offers Offred only one function: to breed. If she deviates, she will, like dissenters, be hanged at the wall or sent out to die slowly of radiation sickness. But even a repressive state cannot obliterate desire - neither Offred's nor that of the two men on which her future hangs. Brilliantly conceived and executed, this powerful evocation of 21st-century America gives full rein to Margaret Atwood's devastating irony, wit and astute perception.

A masterpiece / mistresspiece dystopian work that's also a reminder and warning that this can happen anywhere. The absurdity and hopelessness of the events is captured wonderfully. I liked the idea of a resistance, a black market and the fact that people were questioning the regime, however strong.
Must listen not least because Elizabeth Moss adds the special touch which makes it more empathetic.
