CHASKA, Minn. — Police in the southwest Twin Cities metro are searching for a teen who escaped custody Sunday morning while being transported to the Carver County Juvenile Detention Center.

The Blue Earth County Sheriff's office says a deputy was transporting a 17-year-old boy to the Carver County Juvenile Detention Center in Chaska, after he was detained by Mankato authorities.

The boy ran from the deputy while walking from the squad car to the detention center around 8:24 a.m., authorities say. Transport restraints were not used.

Eight different law enforcement agencies and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources assisted the sheriff's office in trying to find the boy, but the search was called off around 1:40 p.m.

The boy is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall and 140 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black jacket, blue pajama pants and no shoes.

Residents in the area are encouraged to check their garages and sheds for signs of the boy.

Anyone who sees someone matching the boy's description or signs he may have been in the area is asked to call 911, the Blue Earth County Sheriff's Office at 507-304-4863 or submit a tip here
