Convention 108+ will feature high on the agenda of the Privacy Symposium 2023, from 17 to 21 April.

This conference will address the conciliation of access to information and data protection and notably, how far can the need for transparency go? How does the need to inform fit in with the protection of individuals? Does democracy thrive on protection as much as on transparency?

This conference will be an opportunity to raise awareness among the countries of the southern Mediterranean region of the need for strong personal data protection for the benefit of both individuals and economies.

Health is a sector where personal data is an intrinsic component of daily activities, not only for doctors themselves but also for all those who are responsible for managing care, at whatever level. 

On the occasion of the celebration of the 16th Data protection Day, the Italian Presidency of the Committee of Ministers invites Council of Europe Minister’s Deputies to exchange on the state of play of Convention 108+ and its advantages and challenges, around three key aspects of Convention 108+.

The Bureau of the Committee of Convention 108 and the Data Protection Unit are pleased to organise remote and open sessions to present the work of the Committee to a broader audience than the Delegations usually attending our meetings in Strasbourg.

If   GDPR   has   been   described   as   the   new   golden   standard  for  data  protection,  Convention  108  may  represent the potential global standard in this field. The recent progressive expansion of the Council of Europe’s model  and  the  modernised  version  of  the  Convention  have revitalised its role in the global context.

On 11 and 12 am June 2019, the Council of Europe hosted the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy for his public consultation on a Draft recommendation on the protection and use of health data.

Organised in co-operation with the French Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, the objective of this international conference is to reaffirm the universal importance of Convention 108+.

During the 40^th Edition of the annual International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners (ICDPPC) the Council of Europe organised a side-event on the global data protection Convention: Convention 108+ .

The International Conference held in Strasbourg on 21 June 2018 gathered a hundred data protection specialists, from 70 countries, to mark the finalisation of the modernisation of Convention 108. Convention 108+ will provide a unique forum of exchange and cooperation at global level through its Committee and this half-day event was an opportunity for all participants to welcome the modernised Convention and look into what it will bring in the future.

The International Conference held in Strasbourg on 17 June 2016 gathered over a hundred participants, from more than 60 countries, to notably welcome the accession of Mauritius to Convention 108. Mauritius will become the 49th country to join the Convention. Other will follow soon and the unique forum of exchange and cooperation offered by the Committee of the Convention will continue to expand, and gather more and more countries from all regions of the world.

The Council of Europe and the French "Commission Nationale de l' Informatique et des Libertés" (CNIL) have organised this conference, which took place in Strasbourg on 5 June 2014. This annual event, which is reserved for accredited data protection authorities and observers, is a unique occasion for each represented authority to deal with subjects of common interest and to help advance the fundamental right to data protection.
