22.01.2025

Meet Zita Mak, seconded to the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia by Hungary. Her career began in Budapest, where she worked as a police patrol officer for eight years, serving her community and building essential skills. She then joined the Hungarian Prison Service as an internal inspector, ensuring compliance and maintaining high standards. These roles laid the foundation for her move to the international stage.

“I’ve always been drawn to the international environment,” Zita explains. Short-term assignments in Macedonia and Croatia gave her a taste of cross-border collaboration, igniting her desire to work in international Missions. “It was during these experiences that I realised how much I enjoy working in diverse teams, learning from others, and making a difference beyond my home country,” she adds.

I knew this was the beginning of something meaningful for me.

In 2021, Zita embarked on her first long-term mission with EUMM, joining the Field Office in Zugdidi as a monitor. “It was my first application for an international mission, and I felt incredibly lucky to be selected. I knew this was the beginning of something meaningful for me,” she recalls. Her role involved engaging with communities along the Administrative Boundary Line (ABL), building trust and gathering crucial information to support the Mission’s objectives.

After just one year, Zita’s dedication and expertise earned her a promotion to Deputy Team Leader of the ABL Team. “Taking on leadership responsibilities gave me the chance to grow professionally and make a greater impact,” she says. “It taught me the importance of teamwork, decision-making, and adapting to new challenges.”

Recognising her operational capabilities, Zita was later appointed to the Operations Section. Today, she serves as a Mission Operations Officer at EUMM headquarters in Tbilisi, where she contributes to planning and overseeing Mission activities. “Being in this role allows me to see the bigger picture and ensure that our work on the ground aligns with the mission’s overall objectives. It’s both challenging and fulfilling,” she explains.

Working in a Mission like EUMM not only broadens your professional horizon but also enriches you personally.

Zita reflects on the profound personal and professional growth she has experienced through her work with EUMM. “Working in a Mission like EUMM not only broadens your professional horizon but also enriches you personally. You get to work with people from different cultures and backgrounds, and together you make a real difference,” she shares.

When asked about advice for women considering careers in international missions, Zita’s response is both inspiring and pragmatic: “Believe in yourself and don’t hesitate to apply. You might think you’re not ready or experienced enough, but the truth is, every step of the way will help you grow. There’s a place for women in every field, and Missions are no exception. Your skills, perspective, and dedication are needed.”

Through her journey, Zita exemplifies the opportunities and rewards that come with working in international missions. She hopes her story will encourage more women to step forward, take on new challenges, and make meaningful contributions in this unique and dynamic field.
