Delegation of the European Union for the Pacific

What we do

The European Union is represented in the Pacific by a Delegation in Suva, which was established in 1975 and is responsible for the conduct of official relations with Fiji and twelve other Pacific countries and three Overseas Countries and Territories (OCT’s). The Delegation works closely with all the diplomatic missions of the EU Member States represented in the region.

With full diplomatic privileges and immunities and an ambassador (Head of Delegation), the Delegation functions much like an embassy.

Trade promotion and consular matters are handled solely by these national embassies, consulates (and sometimes tourism offices).

The main tasks of the Delegation:

  • To represent the European Union in Fiji and the Pacific.
  • To promote and protect the values and interests of the European Union and its Member States across the Pacific region.
  • To further EU-Pacific relations, bilaterally and regionally.
  • To prepare and oversee the implementation of development cooperation in the Pacific region.
  • To ensure effective policy coordination with EU countries present in the region and raise awareness of the EU and its policies.
  • To inform EU headquarters informed on all developments in the Pacific that are relevant to EU policies.
  • To promote knowledge and understanding of Pacific countries in the EU, and vice versa.
