  • Statement on Georgia

    On behalf of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), we express our deep concern about recent developments in Georgia. The decision of Georgian authorities to halt the EU accession process is a clear indication of the country's ongoing democratic backsliding and deviation from the European path. We believe this decision does not reflect the will of the vast majority of Georgians. At the EESC, we stand in solidarity with Georgian civil society and the people, who have consistently demonstrated their dedication to democratic values and principles. 

  • Serbia: Draft law on foreign agents risks democratic and EU integration goals

    The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is deeply concerned about the draft law submitted to the Serbian Parliament on 29 November 2024, proposing the establishment of a registry for "agents of foreign influence". The proposed legislation would require organisations receiving foreign funding to register with the Ministry of Justice as “foreign agents”, imposing severe penalties for non-compliance.

  • EESC President Highlights Civil Society’s Crucial Role at 18th EU-Serbia JCC in Belgrade

    Today, President Röpke participated in the opening session of the 18th EU-Serbia Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) meeting, reaffirming the Committee’s steadfast support for Serbia’s EU accession journey. The meeting took place at the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia and brought together Serbian officials, civil society representatives, and EU delegates to discuss progress and challenges on Serbia’s path to EU integration. Accompanied by Serbian Minister of European Integration, Tanja Miščević, the EU Ambassador to Serbia, Emanuele Giaufret, and civil society representatives from EU and Serbia, President Röpke underscored the critical role of civil society in fostering democratic dialogue and implementing reforms.

  • EESC President Röpke Highlights Civil Society’s Role in Implementing EU Migration Pact at the 9th European Migration Forum

    Today, President Röpke addressed the 9th European Migration Forum (EMF), emphasizing the vital role of civil society in the successful implementation of the EU’s new Pact on Migration and Asylum. This flagship event, co-organized by the EESC and the European Commission´s Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs, gathered over 150 civil society organizations, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss the EU’s evolving migration policies.
