On 4 December, in a joint ENVI-AGRI committee meeting, Members listened to the Commission's presentation and held an exchange of views on two forest related Commission proposals: measures: a proposal on a monitoring framework for resilient European forests, and on the updating of the Standing Forestry Committee.

The legislative proposal on a forest observation, reporting and data collection framework was first announced inthe new EU forest strategy for 2030.The aim would be to establish an EU-wide integrated forest monitoringframework focusing on a set of parameters connected to EU policy priorities, such as climate change, biodiversity, health, invasive alien species and forest management.Since 1989, the Standing Forestry Committee (Council Decision 89/367/EEC) ensures closer and constant cooperation in the forestry sector between the Member States and the Commission. In 2019, in order to facilitate the implementation of the European Green Deal and the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, the Commission established the Working Group Forest and Nature. As part of this new governance structure, the Commission proposal aims to amend Council Decision 89/367/EEC so as to update the legal bases and the policy references, rename the Standing ForestryCommittee, and extend its tasks.
