On 12 December 2024, members from EU national parliaments will join the LIBE Committee to address key issues surrounding the Rule of Law across Europe, in the context of the Inter-parliamentary meeting on the Situation of the Rule of Law in the EU.

The morning will open with an exchange on the state of the Rule of Law in 2024, especially on ways to strengthen EU Values within the Democracy Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights (DRF) mechanism. This first session will feature Michael McGRATH, Commissioner for Democracy, Justice and the Rule of Law and Clare BAZY MALAURIE, President of the Venice Commission and Professor Laurent Pech, academic expert.

At the second session, the focus will shift to checks and balances as foundational pillars of the Rule of Law. Contributions from the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights and representatives of non-governmental organizations will explore how civil society helps uphold and support these principles within the Union.

This gathering promises in-depth insights and constructive dialogue on one of the EU's core values.
