Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the surge in the number of sub-Saharan migrants
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Rule 149 of its Rules of Procedure,
- whereas between 2010 and 2018 more than one million sub-Saharan Africans settled in Europe[1];
- whereas in 2018 one in two sub-Saharan Africans planned to migrate to Europe;
- whereas, according to a recent survey[2], this trend has accelerated in 2024, with almost 60 % of young people aged 18 to 24 planning to emigrate in the next five years;
- whereas these young people mainly cite Western Europe as their preferred destination;
- whereas this migratory phenomenon is linked to corruption, political instability and the lack of economic prospects in the countries of origin, but also to the absence of any real fight against immigration in Europe;
- Calls on the Commission to step up cooperation with African countries to combat corruption and improve living conditions;
- Considers that the European Union must review its migration policies in order to meet the challenges posed by the unprecedented scale of migration;
- Calls on the Commission to present an action plan to address this growing migratory pressure;
- Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council and the Commission.
