Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the need to lift the sanctions against the Syrian Arab Republic
The European Parliament,
– having regard to the Council decision of 28 May 2020 amending Decision 2013/255/CFSP concerning restrictive measures against Syria[1],
– having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas the sanctions taken by the Council are affecting the Syrian population, which has been enduring a terrible civil war for more than 9 years;
B. whereas the implementation of the US Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act adds to the suffering of the civil population;
C. whereas Turkey is illegally occupying Northern Syria, which has led to dramatic humanitarian consequences;
D. whereas neighbouring Lebanon is in a very critical situation itself;
E. whereas these harsh conditions imposed on the Syrian population will probably lead to a new wave of emigration towards neighbouring countries and the European Union;
1. Calls on the Council to put an end to its sanctions against the Syrian Arab Republic;
2. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the President of the European Council and to the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy / Vice-President of the Commission for a Stronger Europe in the World.
