MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on preventing cardiovascular diseases

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on preventing cardiovascular diseases

The European Parliament,

 having regard to Article 168 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,

 having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas more than 1.8 million people die from cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in the European Union per year;

 

B. whereas dietary factors, smoking, high cholesterol, a sedentary lifestyle, diabetes and high blood pressure further increase the risk of dying by CVDs;

 

C. whereas CVDs remain the leading cause of death in Italy, taking around 220 000 lives per year, with a mortality rate of 27.8 deaths per 10 000 inhabitants;

 

1. Urges the Commission to ensure continued support for the funding of CVD research under the current and future EU research framework programmes, including research on integrated care models and effective CVD prevention and management measures;

 

2. Stresses how essential it is to share best practices and support research into the effectiveness of prevention measures and programmes;

 

3. Considers a healthy food environment to play a crucial role in preventing non-communicable diseases and calls on the Member States and the Commission to step up their actions to ensure that the most healthy and sustainable food is also the most affordable.
