Standardising health professions

Priority question for written answer P-000557/2024
to the Commission
Rule 138
Silvia Sardone (ID)
Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications seeks to establish a system for the mutual recognition of professions and standardise the corresponding competences within the European Union. However, the Directive is not being applied in the same way to all of the various health professions.
According to some experts, in order to guarantee public healthcare and ensure that it functions as part of the broader welfare system, the profile and skills of all health professionals must be reassessed at European level, through amendments and new rules. For the system to operate properly and sustainably, it is vital to put in place new organisational models, identifying emerging roles and tasks and assigning new responsibilities.
In view of the above, and taking into account the Commission’s competence, I would ask the following questions:
- 1.What steps does the Commission intend to take to standardise the existing competences of the various health professions?
- 2.Is it considering amending Directive 2005/36/EC to address the current mismatch among the various health professions?
