Useful information about the flight from Belfast to Majorca
Palma de Mallorca, the Capital of the Balearic Islands
Palma is both modern, with glittery shops, and quaint with its ancient architecture and narrow streets in the Old Town, and the magnificent Gothic cathedral proudly standing out in the centre.
Best time for visiting Palma
Palma is an all year round city. In summer it can get very hot, whereas winter can be cold with snow sometimes falling in December and January. May brings in the beginning of the bathing season.
Tips and facts before visiting Palma
If you'd like to visit at festival time, Palma's biggest celebration is the Night of Fire (Nit de Foc), which is held on the eve of the Fiesta of Sant Joan on the 24th June, celebrating the life of John the Baptist. The celebrations start around 10pm on 23rd June and continue all night long with live music, fireworks, and street parties. A music festival is held in January (19th - 20th) for the Fiesta de Sant Sebastiá, the patron saint of Palma. Easter celebrations, complete with processions, are held during the Semana Santa in March or April.
The languages spoken in Palma are Spanish and Catalan. You will find that English is also often spoken. For eating out or food, Mallorca is generally less expensive than London. Car and bike hire is relatively cheap. Palma is one hour ahead of London.
Palma local information
Palma de Mallorca Airport is about 9 km from the city centre. For ease and comfort, car hire is widely available at the airport. Bus 1 runs every fifteen minutes from the airport to Palma city, costing around ten percent of the taxi price to the centre of Palma, which is about 30EUR.
Prices for holiday accommodation are higher during the peak season in the period July to September, but in Palma and the surrounding area the average price starts at about 50EUR per night per person for hotels. The average price is lower for B&B or hostel accommodation, being around 20EUR per night per person. For getting about in Palma, you can reach most parts of the city on foot as it is relatively small. However, there is a well-developed public transport network (metro and buses), which is far less expensive than going by taxi. If you want to get to other parts of the island from Palma, there are trains and buses operating from the Plaza de Espana.
