September to January is the best time to visit Kolkata, temperatures are generally in the teens. In mid-April the Bengali New Year is celebrated with colourful processions and traditions. Planning your trip to Kolkata
Do your research before travelling, British citizens can apply for an e-Tourist Visa if specific requirements are met. Also remember that UDF's (User Development Fees) or tips may be added to your airfare if not already included, usually amounting to about Rs 1,000. The cost of living in Kolkata is lower than in the United Kingdom. Inexpensive thali, a selection of Indian and Nepalese dishes, is approximately Rs 130. More expansive restaurant meals start at Rs 350.
Lodgings in Sudder Street in the form of hostels and hotels near Howrah railway station are the least expensive. Mid-range hotel rooms cost about Rs 1,500 and luxury accommodations with all the amenities begin at Rs 5,000.
Getting around this capital city
After landing at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, private and state operated bus lines are available for travel into the city centre, the historic Esplanade section and Kolkata's twin city, Howrah for about Rs 60. These air conditioned vehicles operate on a ten to fifteen minute schedule until late evening. Pre-paid taxis are also available, follow the signs to make arrangements. A less expensive, more adventurous option is to take a bus or taxi to the Dum Dum metro station. In this case getting to the heart of the city will cost about Rs 10 in addition to the taxi fare. Taxis start at around Rs 25 for the first two kilometres, then Rs 18 for each additional kilometre travelled. The metro offers discounted Smartcards for getting around the city's six zones. Prices range from Rs 10 to Rs 250 depending on the distance.
