The beautiful Italian resort of Venice is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. It's a magical place with plenty of character, charm, history and style.
Best of Venice - when to go
The best time to travel to Venice is between April and October when the weather is warm. The winter months can be a little cold and wet, there can also be flooding at this time of year. It might be interesting to arrange a stay in Venice to coincide with all year round holidays and festivals. There's an art exhibition every two years, the Biennale di Venezia. The Venice Carnival is held 10-17 days before Ash Wednesday although dates do change. In July enjoy the Festa del Redentore with processions, fireworks and concerts. For eleven days during August/September there's an international Film Festival on Lido Island.
Before travelling
The cost of living in Venice is generally cheaper than in London. Eating out in restaurants is reasonable with meals costing about 10 Euros, beer is approx 4 Euros. The food in the markets is cheaper than in the UK and so is alcohol.
Getting to the city centre and finding somewhere to stay
Arrange to use the FLY shuttle bus operated by ATVO which will take you to the Piazzale Roma in the centre of Venice. A one-way ticket is approximately 15 Euros. The ACTV number 15 bus is about 8 Euros for an adult, single ticket, it takes around 25 minutes journey time. Water buses or Alilaguna single tickets cost in the region of around 15 Euros while taxis to the city centre will set you back about 40 Euros. Expect to pay about 25 Euros per night for a hostel or 50 Euros per person, per night, to stay in a three star hotel. Public transport in the city centre is via Vaporettos (water buses), a 75 minute ticket will cost you about 7.50 Euros. Day passes, which are also valid on the buses, are about 18 Euros or 30 Euros for two days. For a 7 day pass it's approx 60 Euros. A Carta Venezia is recommended for stays of longer than 3 days. Taxi prices are roughly 16 Euros for 3 kms and then around 2 Euros per km after that. Many of the more famous central tourist attractions can be explored on foot like Rialto Bridge, San Giorgio or Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale).
