Heathrow to Lisbon flight: ticket to a city full of history
Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is situated roughly half way down the west coast of the country. It is a lively place to visit and it is becoming a very popular weekend destination. Lisbon is built on a steep hillside so wide views are on offer along with pretty winding lanes, a handsome castle, fascinating museums and al fresco cafes. The stunning monastery, Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, is not to be missed with interesting architecture both inside and out.
When is the best time to fly to Lisbon?
The city is a great place to visit all year round with hot and sunny weather in the summer months and mild temperatures in the winter. It can get windy and changeable over winter, so pack clothing for every type of weather.
In mid February Lisbon throws a 'Carnaval' when there's a parade, Portuguese music, dancing and circus performers. In June the patron saint of Portugal, Santo Antonio, is honoured in a month-long celebration when Lisbon is decorated in bright colours and twinkling lights and there's music, dancing and a party atmosphere.
Some handy local information about Lisbon
The currency used in Portugal is the Euro. Eating and drinking out, groceries and public transport are all generally cheaper than they are in London with lunch menus available for as little as around EUR 8.
Getting from the airport to the city centre is possible by metro or taxi. The metro is located in Terminal 1 and runs between 6 am and 1 am. To get to the centre take the metro to Saldanha Station and change trains - the journey takes about 25 minutes and costs roughly EUR 2. A taxi will cost approximately EUR 20 with an extra charge of a euro for each piece of luggage.
Accommodation and public transport in Lisbon
Hotels are reasonably priced in Lisbon with budget rooms costly from EUR 15 a night for a single and EUR 45 for a nice double.
When it comes to getting around Lisbon, many of the tourist sites can easily be reached on foot. There are buses, a metro system, trams, urban trains and ferries which are good value, with single tickets priced at EUR 1.50 and day passes costing around 6 EUR. There are top up cards, like Oyster cards, available too which are called Viva Viagem and this is the cheapest way to pay for travel in Lisbon. Taxis have a base fare of around EUR 3.50, then 50 cents per kilometre is added.
