Tuscany's capital Florence: travel information

The Italian city of culture is a particularly pleasant destination in spring and autumn. Summers can be very hot. In odd years, the contemporary art fair Florence Biennale is usually held in December.

Ideal months to visit are March to October. The Florentine New Year is celebrated on March 24 and 25 with historical processions. On June 24, the city's patron saint's day is celebrated with a ball game in Piazza Santa Croce in medieval costume and fireworks.

Obtaining illegal goods from street vendors can result in heavy fines. Day trips to Pisa and Sienna are highly recommended. Price-wise, Florence is comparable to major UK cities. Inexpensive meals in restaurants cost from about 6 EUR upwards, beer is about 5 EUR and soft drinks are about 1.80 EUR. As a rule, prices depend on whether you eat what you buy sitting down or standing up.
