Methane Observations for Large Emission Event Detection and Monitoring

7–9 January 2025, Virtual

This event will be conducted in Spanish.

While carbon dioxide (CO2) is the primary greenhouse gas emitted through human activities, methane is estimated around 80 times more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere on a 20-year timescale. Methane is an attractive target for mitigation activities because it has a relatively short decadal-scale lifetime in the atmosphere (as compared with the century-scale carbon dioxide lifetime), it can be utilized as an energy source or combusted (converted to CO2) in order to reduce its global warming potential, and the safety issues associated with high concentrations of this flammable gas. Many activities can lead to the release of large concentrations of methane during the course of normal industrial operations or as accidental releases, these are often referred to as super emitter events, which can be identified from modern satellites.

This introductory two-part training will begin with an introduction to the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center and provide participants with an overview of how methane observations from the Earth surface Mineral dust Source Investigation (EMIT) mission can be used to identify and monitor areas of high methane enhancement. This course will also demonstrate how to navigate the U.S. Greenhouse Gas center portal to access data products as well as highlight tools for visualizing methane observations.

By the end of this training attendees will be able to:
  1. Identify the goals and objectives of the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center
  2. Define the roles of methane and large emission events in climate change
  3. Identify the sensors used to measure methane
  4. Recognize the strengths and limitations of satellite observations used to measure methane for large emission event tracking
  5. Navigate the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center Portal and the EMIT Open Data Portal to access and visualize data for large emission event tracking
Audience
Federal, state, and local government agency representatives, United Nations agencies with policy mandates related to GHG emission measurement, monitoring and mitigation (e.g., UNEP), entities whose operations produce methane (i.e. oil and gas sector, landfills, livestock, etc.), as well as non-public sector entities with roles/responsibilities in providing GHG data, solutions and services.

University students, early career researchers, and the media may also be interested.

Course Format
Two, 90-minute parts on 7 January and 9 January 2025
Each part includes a 30-min Q&A session

Unlocking Financing for Organic Waste Management: Insights from the Financial Readiness Framework Webinar

15 January 2025, Virtual

Cities often face challenges in obtaining financing for organic waste management projects that mitigate methane emissions and improve public health, such as landfill gas capture, composting, and anaerobic digestion projects. The new Global Methane Initiative (GMI) Financial Readiness Framework for Organic Waste Management, developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S EPA), provides high-level practical guidance to help national and subnational governments, as well as private sector project developers and other stakeholders, understand the process for financing organic waste management projects, mitigate potential investment risks, and improve the bankability of projects.

To learn more about overcoming challenges related to financing organic waste management projects, please join us at this upcoming webinar. The webinar will bring together several finance experts to discuss case studies of municipalities that overcame barriers to access finance for their organic waste projects to reduce methane emissions.

Date and time: 15 January 2025 at 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. EST (UTC -5)

Speakers:
  • Klara Zimmerman, Program Manager, U.S. EPA
  • Jiao Tang & Cristina Clopatofsky, Catalytic Finance Foundation
  • Magda Correal, Inter-American Development Bank
  • Gerardo Canales, ImplementaSur
  • World Bank (to be confirmed)

High-Rate Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment Training Course

22 January–7 March 2025, Virtual

Anaerobic wastewater treatment is one of the most energy-efficient technologies for treating wastewater. With minimal energy requirements and the conversion of organic pollutants into renewable energy-rich biogas, there’s a double energy gain – a serious benefit both for now and in the future.

In this course, organized by the International Water Association (IWA) and Delft University of Technology, participants will learn about this state-of-the-art technology from anaerobic experts. Participants will also develop skills in anaerobic reactor design and operation to better handle the current environmental challenges and global energy crisis.

After taking this course, participants will not only understand the potentials of the system but also how to make process designs, evaluate anaerobic treatment processes, and operate high-rate anaerobic reactors efficiently.

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Explain the concepts and advantages of high-rate anaerobic treatment
  • Make a mass balance over you anaerobic reactor and calculate the methane production potential based on the residual water characteristics
  • Recognize the key factors affecting high-rate anaerobic treatment
  • Identify the development and the key features of high-rate anaerobic reactors, and identify the challenges and potentials for a specific high-rate anaerobic technology
  • Acquire the ability to design upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors under specific conditions, and identify the procedures needed to start-up UASB reactors with low grade seed material
  • Identify the most important anaerobic laboratory tests, acquire the theoretical knowledge to assess the maximum capacity of anaerobic sludge, and the biomethane or toxicity potential of waste(waters)
  • Recognize the current application of high-rate anaerobic treatment technologies in practice

The course is ideal for students, academics, consultants, and practitioners in the field of environmental engineering and/or sanitary engineering. It will deepen your knowledge of anaerobic wastewater treatment and provide valuable background information for anybody interested in the field. Participants from developing countries and countries in transition are especially welcome, as this is the right moment to acquaint yourselves with and choose more sustainable solutions in waste and wastewater management, establishing your own energy factory. Since energy benefits may amount to several million euros per year, end-users working in the food and beverage industry, chemical companies, pulp and paper mills, etc., can also benefit from the course.

Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a professional certificate and are eligible to receive 3.0 Continuing Education Units. The course fee is 995 EUR for general participants, and 895.5 EUR for IWA members.

The course will start on 22 January 2025 and end on 7 March 2025, and will consist of 4-5 hours per week.
