As 2024 speeds to a close, now’s the time to take stock of everything you watched and listened to this year. And in the realm of TV, there was a lot.

From witches, to spies, to teachers, to chefs and a whole bunch more, there were plenty of characters to dig into this year. But, as always, some definitely stood out as the best. We went ahead and rounded up our favorite TV shows of the year, but now, it’s time to get specific.

So, in no particular order, here are 13 of the best TV performances of 2024.

We're at the end of 2024, and you know what that means. It's time to look back at what all happened this year. We'll start off by saying that it's been a rollercoaster of a year for many of the streaming services, especially Netflix. While there were many renewals from the streamer, there were also some cancellations.

This year, the streaming powerhouse pulled the plug on 17 of its original series, and there's even a chance there will be more cancellations since 2024 isn't quite over yet. Obviously, a show getting canceled is never a good thing, and it sucks for the people who were hoping for additional installments. However, there's one Netflix show that got the boot this year that we're not exactly sad about.

In this article, we shared all the Netflix show cancellations from this year as well as discussed why we weren't necessarily hurt by one of the shows being axed.

Given the sheer volume of new shows released each month, it's unfortunately natural for some shows to slip through the cracks completely or fade away after having a minor moment. After one show pops, there's another one ready to take its place the next month — or even week!

Sometimes the circle of television life isn't kind to shows that should be much more popular and/or successful, and they remain underrated until they either build a cult following, fizzle out, or get canceled far too soon. The past year wasn't without its long list of shows that deserved more love.

It's no secret that 2024 was a huge year for television, on both the small screen and streaming. There were huge hits like Baby Reindeer, Presumed Innocent, Industry, Shōgun, House of the Dragon, High Potential, The Penguin, and so many shows that had everyone watching and talking.

Disney's new Dream Productions premiered this week but is this Inside Out spinoff worth watching? 

Inside Out 2 has become one of the biggest box office hits of 2024, a fine return to form for Pixar. Meanwhile, a main complaint on the new hit Moana 2 is that it's quite obvious it was meant to be a TV show and retooled for a feature film. Those dual narratives cast an interesting light on the four-episode animated series Dream Productions, a new show by Pixar now airing on Disney+. 

It's set in between the Inside Out movies as Riley is now 12 and growing. We get cameos from the main stars like Joy (Amy Poehler), but the focus is on Dream Productions, who entertain the emotions with dreams. So we get a "mockumentary" looking at this studio as they try to entertain their bosses (the "audience") with the best dreams for Riley.

Girls5Eva has been canceled for a second time, this time by Netflix!

The music-driven series starred Sara Bareilles, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell and Busy Phillipps, and ran for one season on the streamer, but previously had two seasons on Peacock.

Tina Fey co-created the Emmy-nominated series, while her Tony award-winning husband Jeff Richmond writing original music with Meredith Scardino, who co-created the show with Tina. Sara also contributed writing to a few songs.

The cancellation marks the end for Girls5Eva after it got a second life on Netflix. The show, about a girl group that reunites 20-plus years after its only hit, ran for two seasons on Peacock before switching platforms for season three. The first two seasons stream on both platforms, while the now-final season is exclusive to Netflix.

Girls5eva has been canceled again, and this time by Netflix, Deadline has confirmed.

The musical comedy will not have a fourth season on the streamer, marking the second time the show has been canceled.

Girls5eva originally premiered on Peacock in 2021. The show got a second season in 2022 but was dropped by the NBCUniversal streamer after two seasons before Netflix rescued it for a third season.

Season 3 of the comedy premiered in March 2024.

Netflix’s confirmation that Girls5eva was not moving forward with another season came after star Busy Philipps addressed the series’ future on her podcast.

“[Girls5Eva is] dead.I’m just saying it because fuck it. If Netflix won’t, I will,” Philipps said on Doing Her Best. “I guess not enough people watched it or watched it the way that counts. I don’t know. I actually just don’t know.”

The four-episode limited series is now streaming, in its entirety, on Disney+. But before you dive into your latest Pixar obsession, which is a spinoff of “Inside Out,” we are here to answer the most crucial question – when, exactly, is the new film set?

It is set before “Inside Out 2.” In total the series runs 82 minutes. Think of it as “Inside Out 1.5.”

“Dream Productions” is less of a TV series and more of a distress signal. Tasked with making an entire show out of whatever scraps were left over from the studio’s film department, the team behind Pixar’s first — and second-to-last — animated series concocted a spinoff to “Inside Out” about chipper, dedicated directors who, despite doing their best day after day, live under constant threat of demotion or outright termination if the dreams they create aren’t immediate and lasting hits. Sure, these diligent artists learn a few personal lessons along the way — “acknowledging fresh point of views” chief among them — but by the time you get there, it’s no surprise the show’s climax involves a crazed studio head producing a literal nightmare designed to ruin a little girl’s life.

Even if the vast majority of franchise TV extensions from Disney+ didn’t already consist of third-rate...

Riding the coattails of the biggest animated film ever is no mean feat. And Dream Productions, a four-episode narrative series of 20-minute-ish episodes, feels like one of Pixar’s most ambitious small-screen efforts yet. Their TV spin-offs tend to be tiny animated snacks, often no more than 5 minutes at a time; this feels like a full meal, with a runtime that adds up to a full movie. Set between the two _Inside Out_films, you could almost think of it as Inside Out 2.5.

Happily, it’s also an absolute treat, expanding the psychologically rich and comedically fertile setting of a pre-teen’s brain in deeply satisfying ways. Given just how much of a stupendous hit "Inside Out 2" has become, taking the box office record for the highest grossing animated movie of all-time, it makes sense that Disney and Pixar aren't sleeping on their win and dropping a brand new spin-off series from the "Inside Out" world on Disney+. "Dream Productions" takes us back to the briefly glimpsed section of Riley's mind that keeps her brain buzzing while she's fast asleep. As a result, the likes of Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), and the rest of the emotions that reside in Headquarters are out of the picture, leaving a brand new bunch of characters to focus on.

Dream Productions, Pixar’s latest foray into the realm of Disney+ original series’, is perhaps its most experimental work in that space to date. Rather than standalone shorts or a more straightforward long-form sequel like Cars On The Road or Monsters At Work, this new series opts to take the “dreams as a film set” concept, the basis for one of the most memorable sequences in the original Inside Out, and expand it into its own narrative.

Given my love of both Inside Out movies and my personal passion for creative work in general and filmmaking specifically, this angle immediately intrigued me. And while the end result did frequently leave me wanting more, I thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless.

Last month saw streaming platforms settle into their annual cozy season with new fall TV shows and autumn film favorites. This December, Hulu and Disney+ are hunkering down with premieres for several animated TV series, a solid selection of holiday fare, and feel-good movies both old and new.

Disney+ will bring its classic characters together for “Mickey and the Very Many Christmases” as well as “Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade.” It will also premiere “The Simpsons Christmas Double Episode,” “Doctor Who: Joy to the World,” and “CMA Country Christmas” to honor the season. A new week is here, and we are getting ever closer to Thanksgiving. That means holiday movies are starting to come out and Netflix is bringing out one of its biggest of the season. But beyond that, you can also take a look at a new cartoon episode from a beloved franchise and four seasons of a comedy series that was on NBC and Peacock.

First up this week is Hot Frosty! Someone from the romance novel community had to have had a hand in this, right? And the premise is exactly what you might expect. A snowman turns into a real man, and he falls in love with a local woman, played by Lacey Chabert. But will he and their love melt once the sun comes out, or will it survive Christmas? You'll have to watch and see. This movie comes to Netflix on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024.

Netflix has truly been the gift that keeps on giving in 2024. All throughout the year, the streaming service has continued to acquire so many past and recent favorite television series for our binge-watching pleasure, even beyond its own original series.

Exclusive: Everyone’s favorite adventurous toddlers are getting the big-screen treatment unlike any film or show in the franchise before, with sources telling Deadline that Rugrats, the classic Nickelodeon cartoon from the 1990s, is getting a live-action/CGI feature adaptation with Jason Moore on board to direct. Saturday Night Live star Mikey Day co-wrote the script with Streeter Seidell.

Created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain, the Nickelodeon series premiered in 1991 and became one of the network’s most popular series. It followed a group of toddlers — Tommy, Chuckie, Phil and Lil — and their day-to-day lives, usually involving life experiences that become much greater adventures for the foursome.

The show would get rebooted in 1996 following three seasons and would go on to last through the 2000s. Its popularity led to three animated movies and a number of accolades, and has gained new life as a new generation discovers old episodes on streaming.

Six-time Emmy-winner and one-time Tony nominee Will Ferrell appears in a new documentary, “Will & Harper,” now streaming on Netflix. The film, which is getting an awards push from the streamer, showcases a cross-country trip in which Ferrell and his friend and collaborator of 30 years, comedy writer Harper Steele, reconnect following Steele’s gender transition. It features a good many zings but also scenes of genuine emotion.

Speaking to The Independent, Ferrell, who uses his celebrity as something of a de-escalation technique when the duo encounter awkward situations on their journey, was asked why transphobia exists.

“I think we fear what we don’t know,” the beloved comic actor said.

He continued, “There is hatred out there. It’s very real and it’s very unsafe for trans people in certain situations. But I don’t know why trans people are meant to be threatening to me as a cis male.

Disney+ has just announced the launch dates for two upcoming Pixar Animation Studios series and, with that news, comes a new trailer highlighting both animated projects.

Following the record-breaking box office success of Inside Out 2 (which launched on Disney+ earlier today), Dream Productions returns to Riley's mind, this time to explore the inner workings of the studio behind her dreams.

All four episodes of the limited series arrive on the streamer beginning December 11, 2024.

“Dream Productions,” an “Inside Out” spinoff that focuses on the studio inside Riley’s mind that produces dreams, will debut on the streamer on Dec. 11, 2024. All four episodes of the limited series will be available at once. The series, announced at D23 in August following the blockbuster success of “Inside Out 2,” was previously set for 2025.

The original series “Win or Lose,” which features Will Forte voicing a little league baseball coach, will come to Disney+ on Feb. 19, 2025. Throughout eight episodes, the series “reveals what it actually feels like to be in the shoes of eight different characters in the week leading up to the big game — the insecure kids, their helicopter parents, even a lovesick umpire — with incredibly funny, very emotional and uniquely animated perspectives,” per Disney. Each episode is said to have a different visual style.
