As 2024 speeds to a close, now’s the time to take stock of everything you watched and listened to this year. And in the realm of TV, there was a lot.
From witches, to spies, to teachers, to chefs and a whole bunch more, there were plenty of characters to dig into this year. But, as always, some definitely stood out as the best. We went ahead and rounded up our favorite TV shows of the year, but now, it’s time to get specific.
So, in no particular order, here are 13 of the best TV performances of 2024.

We're at the end of 2024, and you know what that means. It's time to look back at what all happened this year. We'll start off by saying that it's been a rollercoaster of a year for many of the streaming services, especially Netflix. While there were many renewals from the streamer, there were also some cancellations.
This year, the streaming powerhouse pulled the plug on 17 of its original series, and there's even a chance there will be more cancellations since 2024 isn't quite over yet. Obviously, a show getting canceled is never a good thing, and it sucks for the people who were hoping for additional installments. However, there's one Netflix show that got the boot this year that we're not exactly sad about.
In this article, we shared all the Netflix show cancellations from this year as well as discussed why we weren't necessarily hurt by one of the shows being axed.

Given the sheer volume of new shows released each month, it's unfortunately natural for some shows to slip through the cracks completely or fade away after having a minor moment. After one show pops, there's another one ready to take its place the next month — or even week!
Sometimes the circle of television life isn't kind to shows that should be much more popular and/or successful, and they remain underrated until they either build a cult following, fizzle out, or get canceled far too soon. The past year wasn't without its long list of shows that deserved more love.
It's no secret that 2024 was a huge year for television, on both the small screen and streaming. There were huge hits like Baby Reindeer, Presumed Innocent, Industry, Shōgun, House of the Dragon, High Potential, The Penguin, and so many shows that had everyone watching and talking.

Disney's new Dream Productions premiered this week but is this Inside Out spinoff worth watching?
Inside Out 2 has become one of the biggest box office hits of 2024, a fine return to form for Pixar. Meanwhile, a main complaint on the new hit Moana 2 is that it's quite obvious it was meant to be a TV show and retooled for a feature film. Those dual narratives cast an interesting light on the four-episode animated series Dream Productions, a new show by Pixar now airing on Disney+.
It's set in between the Inside Out movies as Riley is now 12 and growing. We get cameos from the main stars like Joy (Amy Poehler), but the focus is on Dream Productions, who entertain the emotions with dreams. So we get a "mockumentary" looking at this studio as they try to entertain their bosses (the "audience") with the best dreams for Riley.

There will be no season four for Girls5Eva: Netflix has canceled the comedy after its first season on the platform and third overall.
The cancellation marks the end for Girls5Eva after it got a second life on Netflix. The show, about a girl group that reunites 20-plus years after its only hit, ran for two seasons on Peacock before switching platforms for season three. The first two seasons stream on both platforms, while the now-final season is exclusive to Netflix.
Created by Meredith Scardino and executive produced by Tina Fey, the series stars Sara Bareilles, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Paula Pell as the members of the titular group. Philipps said on a recent episode of her podcast Busy Philipps Is Doing Her Best that the show is “dead. I’m just saying it because, fuck it. If Netflix won’t, I will. I guess not enough people...

Girls5eva has been canceled again, and this time by Netflix, Deadline has confirmed.
The musical comedy will not have a fourth season on the streamer, marking the second time the show has been canceled.
Girls5eva originally premiered on Peacock in 2021. The show got a second season in 2022 but was dropped by the NBCUniversal streamer after two seasons before Netflix rescued it for a third season.
Season 3 of the comedy premiered in March 2024.
Netflix’s confirmation that Girls5eva was not moving forward with another season came after star Busy Philipps addressed the series’ future on her podcast.
“[Girls5Eva is] dead.I’m just saying it because fuck it. If Netflix won’t, I will,” Philipps said on Doing Her Best. “I guess not enough people watched it or watched it the way that counts. I don’t know. I actually just don’t know.”

“Girls5Eva” sang their last song (again).
The musical comedy series, starring Sara Bareilles, Paula Pell, Busy Philipps and Renée Elise Goldsberry, has been canceled after debuting its third season on Netflix. The streamer previously saved it from cancellation after Peacock axed the show after two seasons.
“Girs5Eva,” created by Meredith Scardino and executive produced by Tina Fey, Robert Carlock and Jeff Richmond, follows the members of a former girl group who decide to give their musical dreams one last shot. Only this time around, they have to contend with divorce, New York lonely boys and knee surgeries, as well as a whole new generation of young stars who are equally desperate for fame.
At the time of the Netflix renewal, the streamer also secured the rights to the first two seasons to give its audience the chance to catch up from the beginning. “There were a lot of friendly fans and faces over there.

B.P.E. no more. After three seasons, “Girls5Eva” has been canceled for the second time — this time, by Netflix.
The first two seasons of the musical comedy streamed on Peacock from 2021 to 2022; when Peacock decided not to move forward, Netflix came in to renew the series for a third season, which aired in March 2024.
Created by Meredith Scardino and produced by Tina Fey, the comedy followed a ’90s girls group that reunite and attempt to revive their careers after they get an unexpected second chance. Sara Bareilles, Busy Philipps, Paula Pell and Renée Elise Goldsberry starred in the series, which earned critical acclaim for its fast-paced humor and catchy, satiric original songs.
While many expected the show to take off on Netflix, it failed to do so. Variety TV Editor Michael Schneider recently dissected one potential reason, pointing to the title and noting that many who scroll through Netflix,...

There's some exciting news for comedy fans out of Netflix, but there's also some not-so-exciting news for comedy fans as well. It wouldn't be the end of the year if some difficult decisions weren't being made about the fates of our favorite shows.
First, the good news: Michael Schur's spy comedy starring Ted Danson has been renewed! A Man on the Inside season 2 was announced on Dec. 16, just under one month after its release on Nov. 21. The show received overwhelming critical acclaim and has enjoyed strong viewership ratings, debuting at the peak of Netflix's most popular English TV shows ranking.
In addition to its success, Danson earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance as Charles Nieuwendyk, a retiree and widower who answers an advertisement to become a "man on the inside" for a private investigator. He infiltrates a retirement home to help catch a thief, but along the way,...

How should we face the future that's to come? If the TV shows that moved us in 2024 are any indication, the answer involves collective action, the preservation of hope and anger, and -- as shows like "Evil" and "English Teacher" effortlessly remind us -- the ability to laugh in the face of the absurd. It seems likely that the creators making our favorite shows didn't foresee some of this year's most dystopic global and national events, but their art speaks to a world in unprecedented chaos nonetheless. Whether you're more into the stalwart mottos of Starfleet, the unspoken camaraderie between the vulnerable women of Ennis, Alaska, or the "okey-dokey" attitude of Vault 33's best and brightest, the best television of 2024 offered a number of stirring solutions to the question we're all anxious to ask: how the hell do we get through this?...

“Dream Productions” is ready to cast its spell.
The four-episode limited series is now streaming, in its entirety, on Disney+. But before you dive into your latest Pixar obsession, which is a spinoff of “Inside Out,” we are here to answer the most crucial question – when, exactly, is the new film set?
Let’s get into it!
When is “Dream Productions” set?
It is set before “Inside Out 2.” In total the series runs 82 minutes. Think of it as “Inside Out 1.5.”
But it is being released after “Inside Out 2.”

“Dream Productions” is less of a TV series and more of a distress signal. Tasked with making an entire show out of whatever scraps were left over from the studio’s film department, the team behind Pixar’s first — and second-to-last — animated series concocted a spinoff to “Inside Out” about chipper, dedicated directors who, despite doing their best day after day, live under constant threat of demotion or outright termination if the dreams they create aren’t immediate and lasting hits. Sure, these diligent artists learn a few personal lessons along the way — “acknowledging fresh point of views” chief among them — but by the time you get there, it’s no surprise the show’s climax involves a crazed studio head producing a literal nightmare designed to ruin a little girl’s life.

Riding the coattails of the biggest animated film ever is no mean feat. And Dream Productions, a four-episode narrative series of 20-minute-ish episodes, feels like one of Pixar’s most ambitious small-screen efforts yet. Their TV spin-offs tend to be tiny animated snacks, often no more than 5 minutes at a time; this feels like a full meal, with a runtime that adds up to a full movie. Set between the two _Inside Out_films, you could almost think of it as Inside Out 2.5.
Happily, it’s also an absolute treat, expanding the psychologically rich and comedically fertile setting of a pre-teen’s brain in deeply satisfying ways. Dreams as a concept have already been briefly explored in the two Inside Out films, beginning with Pete Docter’s superlative 2015 smash and continued with Kelsey Mann’s solid sequel: a means of delving into unprocessed memories, the dreams themselves staged as if giant movie productions,...

Dream Productions, Pixar’s latest foray into the realm of Disney+ original series’, is perhaps its most experimental work in that space to date. Rather than standalone shorts or a more straightforward long-form sequel like Cars On The Road or Monsters At Work, this new series opts to take the “dreams as a film set” concept, the basis for one of the most memorable sequences in the original Inside Out, and expand it into its own narrative.
Given my love of both Inside Out movies and my personal passion for creative work in general and filmmaking specifically, this angle immediately intrigued me. And while the end result did frequently leave me wanting more, I thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless.

It's been a long year that went by in the blink of an eye, but in the midst of all 2024 had offer, there were so many great Netflix shows for us to binge. Some people like to focus on what we didn't get — new seasons of Stranger Things, Wednesday, You, etc. — but think of what we did get.
In 2024, Netflix ended many fan-favorite series, like The Umbrella Academy, Elite, and Vikings: Valhalla, and kicked off the final season of Cobra Kai. There were new seasons of beloved hit such as Bridgerton, Emily in Paris, and Outer Banks. And to top it all off, Netflix managed to release handfuls upon handfuls of new shows the world couldn't stop binge-watching.
While your picks for the best Netflix shows of 2024 might vary, here are four of our biggest highlights of the year, as well as a short list of more excellent picks!

Pixar Heads Back Inside Riley’s Mind In New Trailer For Inside Out Spin-Off Series Dream Productions
Critically acclaimed, beloved by fans, and huge at the box office, it would be fair to say that _Inside Out_and Inside Out 2 have proven to be something of a pair of dream productions for the folks over at Pixar. As such, it seems only fitting then that after the franchise's sequel became the highest-grossing animated movie ever made this summer, the legendary animation outfit's shiny new spin-off show is called, well, Dream Productions. A four-part limited series made in The Office's mockumentary mould, writer-director Mike Jones' offering — the first of its kind for Pixar — returns to Riley's mind, revisiting her and her Core Emotions (led by Amy Poehler's Joy and Lewis Black's Anger) whilst introducing viewers to the (literal) dream makers inside her head. Check out the new trailer below;

Last month saw streaming platforms settle into their annual cozy season with new fall TV shows and autumn film favorites. This December, Hulu and Disney+ are hunkering down with premieres for several animated TV series, a solid selection of holiday fare, and feel-good movies both old and new.
Disney+ will bring its classic characters together for “Mickey and the Very Many Christmases” as well as “Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade.” It will also premiere “The Simpsons Christmas Double Episode,” “Doctor Who: Joy to the World,” and “CMA Country Christmas” to honor the season. Top non-holiday picks include the return of “Marvel Animation’s What If…?” (kicking off December 22 with new episodes premiering daily for eight days), “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” and “Elton John: Never Too Late.”
Over at Hulu, the divisive new horror flick “Cuckoo” starring Hunter Schafer is set to stream alongside a robust catalogue of various other movies.

If anyone could be trusted to run your dreams, it’s Paula Pell.
And that’s just what she’s doing for “Inside Out” teen Riley in Pixar’s new four-episode limited series, “Dream Productions,” premiering on Disney+ December 11.
That’s right, mere months after “Inside Out 2” set box office records, Riley and her Core Emotions (led by Amy Poehler as Joy) are back onscreen in another story about managing a healthy relationship with your emotions.

On a recent episode of her family’s reality show, Kim Kardashian dropped an interesting bombshell.
In the wake of her portrayal as an evil publicist named Siobhan Corbyn on American Horror Story: Delicate, the former sex tape participant got candid about her future in the entertainment industry.
And why she knows it may not last forever.

“I didn’t have an agent, and then after American Horror Story… all these different people wanted to meet,” Kardashian explained to her friends, adding at the time:
“We literally spent a day, we went to all the studios, and everyone called within, like, 20 minutes with offers.”
Kim actually isn’t terrible in the aforementioned series.

Netflix has truly been the gift that keeps on giving in 2024. All throughout the year, the streaming service has continued to acquire so many past and recent favorite television series for our binge-watching pleasure, even beyond its own original series.
Whether it's This Is Us, The Resident, Fire Country, Interview with the Vampire, Sex and the City, Lost, or How I Met Your Mother, there were (and are) plenty of great shows to binge on Netflix. In a post-Suits renaissance world, what's old is new again and we're all eating it up.
But the streamer isn't finished yet with bringing popular and underrated series to its ranks. This fall, Gossip Girl returns to Netflix, and soon after The CW classic arrives in October, one of NBC's most underrated workplace comedies begins streaming on Netflix for the first time.

Exclusive: Everyone’s favorite adventurous toddlers are getting the big-screen treatment unlike any film or show in the franchise before, with sources telling Deadline that Rugrats, the classic Nickelodeon cartoon from the 1990s, is getting a live-action/CGI feature adaptation with Jason Moore on board to direct. Saturday Night Live star Mikey Day co-wrote the script with Streeter Seidell.
Created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain, the Nickelodeon series premiered in 1991 and became one of the network’s most popular series. It followed a group of toddlers — Tommy, Chuckie, Phil and Lil — and their day-to-day lives, usually involving life experiences that become much greater adventures for the foursome.
The show would get rebooted in 1996 following three seasons and would go on to last through the 2000s. Its popularity led to three animated movies and a number of accolades, and has gained new life as a new generation discovers old episodes on streaming.

Six-time Emmy-winner and one-time Tony nominee Will Ferrell appears in a new documentary, “Will & Harper,” now streaming on Netflix. The film, which is getting an awards push from the streamer, showcases a cross-country trip in which Ferrell and his friend and collaborator of 30 years, comedy writer Harper Steele, reconnect following Steele’s gender transition. It features a good many zings but also scenes of genuine emotion.
Speaking to The Independent, Ferrell, who uses his celebrity as something of a de-escalation technique when the duo encounter awkward situations on their journey, was asked why transphobia exists.
“I think we fear what we don’t know,” the beloved comic actor said.
He continued, “There is hatred out there. It’s very real and it’s very unsafe for trans people in certain situations. But I don’t know why trans people are meant to be threatening to me as a cis male.

Before each Saturday Night Live performance, Kristen Wiig would light a candle, she once told Kelly Clarkson. Amy Poehler shared her own pre-show ritual with Clarkson this week. “When Don Pardo would say my name,” Poehler explained, “I used to just take a moment and close my eyes for about a split second. Because that's about all the time you have at SNL. Molly Shannon used to do that — she told me about it so then I did it.”
Aww, sweet. But not as fun as another SNL tradition that Poehler revealed. It turns out the Parks and Rec star got Shannon’s office after she left the show, a fact evidenced by the scribbles Shannon left on the room’s walls. “Everyone would just kind of leave their name like summer camp,” Poehler said. “You'd write your name on the wall.”

Over in the broadcast television world, it's cancellation jitters season as the networks start to announce all of the renewals and cancellations ahead of the reveal of their fall schedules. However, over here in Netflix Land, it's always cancellation jitters season.
Netflix has already handed out a number of renewals and cancellations in 2024, including axing Obliterated after one season and renewing Heartbreak High for a third and final season. But a handful of fan-favorite Netflix shows released this spring are still awaiting word on their fates. There's cause for concern for all of them (except one), though more than one should receive good news.
Here are three Netflix shows currently in the running for a renewal and an additional two that should be renewed but are looking more like cases for cancellation.

For years, Sara Bareilles has been enjoying a career that’s hard to pin down. She hit the spotlight as a singer-songwriter behind albums like “Little Voice” and “The Blessed Unrest,” but she also detoured into musical theater by writing the music and lyrics for the Broadway show “Waitress” in 2015. She’s been nominated for Grammys as a songwriter and performer, for Tonys as a composer and actress and for Emmys as an actress, host and songwriter.
In a way, the comedy series “Girls5eva,” which moved to Netflix for Season 3 after two seasons and one cancellation on Peacock, includes some of everything Bareilles does. She’s one of the stars of the series created by Meredith Scardino, joining Busy Philipps, Paula Pell and Renée Elise Goldsberry as members of a one-hit girl group trying to mount a comeback 20 years past their heyday. And in what has become something of a tradition,...
