We're halfway through December, and Netflix has already released so many great shows this month. We're talking about series like The Ultimatum: Marry or Move on season 3, Black Doves, Queer Eye season 9, No Good Deed, etc.
Of course, some become instant hits with viewers, but others end up flying under the radar. This doesn't necessarily mean that they're bad. It's just that people either didn't know about them or they just didn't pull them in right away. These are called hidden gems, and they deserve some love and attention, just like the more popular shows.
In this article, we shared four underrated Netflix shows released this month that you should add to your watchlist. Don't you think it's time to broaden your horizons and watch something different from what you're used to watching? We think so!

At first look, Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld may appear to be just another animated series geared at young adults. Yet, it transcends this category in a familiar and delightfully unique way. Echo Wu’s work masterfully weaves Chinese mythology with the challenges of adolescent life in small-town Texas, creating a narrative that speaks on numerous levels.
Jentry Chau, a 16-year-old grappling with her emerging skills and the weight of her family’s past while navigating the ordinary turbulence of adolescence, is central to the story.
The series, set against the vibrant backdrops of Seoul and Riverfork, Texas, illustrates Jentry’s duality of existence—her life at a luxurious boarding school contrasting with the terrible spectres of her past.
It’s a complex tapestry that reflects my personal experience with cultural duality, posing questions about identity and belonging. The magic of this show rests not just in its supernatural elements...

Jentry Chau Vs The Underworld is a 13-part animated series on Netflix by showrunners Ali Wong and Echo Wu. The supernatural teen drama follows Jentry Chau, a nearly 16-year-old who has powers that she’s been trying to repress all her life because she set off a massive fire in her town back in Texas as a kid. After moving to Seoul, Jentry essentially led an ordinary life, just as she dreamed she would, but not for long. Now that Jentry is 16 years old, an evil man named Mr. Cheng is going to try to steal her soul in order to wield her powers. Jentry has only a grandaunt for family, who she calls Gugu. During Jentry’s 16th birthday week, an undead creature named Ed shows up out of the blue and tells Jentry about Mr. Cheng. She happens to be on the phone with Gugu at the time,...

Nearing the 16th birthday of Jentry Chau, the girl rediscovers an old power she’s been repressing for years when she learns that a demon is after her soul. On the journey to keeping her soul safe, Jentry will learn many family secrets and come into her identity. Jentry Chau Vs The Underworld is a coming-of-age story with supernatural elements such as demons and ghosts, but more importantly, it is a show about accepting the quirks in your identity and being okay with being extraordinary. Written by Echo Wu, the series follows a Chinese immigrant in Texas, who then moved to Seoul due to an incident that occurred when she was just a kid. She has to eventually return home due to unforeseen circumstances, but will she be okay? It’s been a while since I watched an animated series, and I’ve got to admit this one was a...

Being a 16-year-old in high school means battling demons, but for Jentry Chau (Ali Wong), the hero of Jentry Chau vs the Underworld, the fights aren’t just figurative — she’s quite literally fending off evil entities from the underworld.
Created by Echo Wu, Jentry Chau vs the Underworld is a new animated series that follows a Chinese-American high schooler whose life is turned upside down when a dangerous demon king tries to steal her powers. But, make no mistake, Jentry is also navigating her share of traditional teenage problems — like exploring romantic interests, grappling with an adult who always thinks they know best, or contorting to maintain high social standing among her peers.
Despite its heavy serving of all things supernatural, it’s largely rooted in true-to-life themes that’ll resonate with folks of all ages, from all walks of life. Watch the new trailer above!

Netflix Animation held its first slate preview event June 6 at the Tudum in L.A., as a lead-up to the Annecy Animation Festival (June 9-15), where it will premiere Shannon Tindle’s “Ultraman: Rising” (streaming June 14) and tout some of its upcoming works in 2024 and 2025.
Hosted by Christopher Sean (the voice star of “Ultraman: Rising”), attendees were treated to exclusive presentations, previews, and special announcements. The biggest announcement was the full title of Aardman’s next stop-motion feature, “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl,” which will have an Oscar-qualifying run this winter before streaming in 2025.
Directed by franchise creator Nick Park and creative director Merlin Crossingham, who offered a pre-recorded introduction, “Vengeance Most Fowl” marks the return of the villainous penguin, Feathers McGraw, from the Oscar-winning short “The Wrong Trousers.” The film is a cautionary tale of high-tech gone wrong involving an out-of-control “smart gnome” with a mind of its own.
