Four days after its Dec. 26 premiere, “Squid Game” Season 2 had amassed 68 million views in four days, becoming Netflix’s biggest TV debut ever. A week later, it had picked up 126.2 million views across 11 days, more than any Netflix series has ever achieved in that amount of time. One of the men convicted in Johnny Wactor‘s death received his prison sentence on Wednesday, January 15. Frank Olano, who was convicted on lesser charges in the General Hospital star’s slaying, was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison on charges of being an accessory after the killing, receiving stolen property, and three counts of possession of a firearm by a felon, according to Deadline. The 22-year-old’s sentencing came after he entered a no-contest plea in October 2024. Fox is taking the Super Bowl to a new frontier — or, at least to one that is new for Fox.

Fox Sports will stream its February 9 telecast of Super Bowl Lix on its sister broadband outlet Tubi, a change from the recent past when the company made a stream available via Fox Sports digital outlets. The move will no doubt spotlight Tubi, a free, ad-supported streaming hub that has gained traction even as many of Fox’s rivals rely more heavily on subscription based broadband outlets. Three years later, Dan Erickson still has no problem remembering the joy and relief he felt when “Severance” premiered.

“I knew that I loved it and saw it as something special, but I wasn’t sure it was going to become any kind of a widespread hit,” the series creator told IndieWire ahead of Season 2’s premiere. “When it hit the way it did, I was elated, but then also felt this sense of sophomore dread of not being totally sure if I could replicate it.”

Season 2 premieres on January 17, but the reviews are literally already in: certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and universally acclaimed on MetaCritic, an IndieWire Critic’s Pick that Iw’s Ben Travers described as “deeper, darker, and worth the wait.” But back then, as the confetti settled on Season 1, Erickson faced down a path more daunting than that one dark hallway at Lumon: how to do it again.

Viewers of Today won’t see co-host Sheinelle Jones back on their screens for a while.

Jones posted on Instagram on Wednesday that she is taking an extended break from the NBC morning show to deal with a “family health matter.” Jones, who has been absent from Today since Dec. 18, didn’t disclose the nature of the health matter or whom it involved, but instead thanked her Today show family and fans for their ongoing support.

On Wednesday, January 15, Starz released the first-look teaser trailer for “Spartacus: House of Ashur,” a sequel to its original three-season “Spartacus” series, which started in 2010 with “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” continued with “Spartacus: Vengeance,” and concluded in 2013 with “Spartacus: War of the Damned.” Between “Blood and Sand” and “Vengeance,” Starz made a six-episode miniseries “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.”

(Spartacus, by the way, is a real historical figure. He was a Thracian gladiator and one of the escaped slaves who led an uprising against the Roman Republic in the early first century BC. Andy Whitfield played Spartacus for the first season and provided a brief voiceover for its prequel. At the time, he was battling stage IV non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Whitfield died in 2011; Liam McIntyre took over the role in Seasons 2 and 3. Kirk Douglas famously played Spartacus in Stanley Kubrick’s 1960 film.)

Richard Jenkins has joined the cast of the upcoming HBO limited series “Dtf St. Louis,” Variety has learned.

The gritty, street-level Marvel series will be the official reintroduction of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and his cast of characters from the original Marvel TV series that launched on Netflix.
