The "Transformers" cartoons got their hooks into me as a kid, and to this day I care more about these Robots in Disguise than I probably should. Director Josh Cooley's animated prequel "Transformers One" is, honestly, the "Transformers" movie I wanted when I was 12, even more so than Travis Knight's also very good "Bumblebee."
"Transformers One" is a prequel film, showing how Optimus Prime and Megatron went from best pals to leading a war on opposite sides. Ever wondered why Decepticons brand themselves with a name evoking "Deception"? This is the movie for you!

For the past decade, Eric Pearson has been a go-to writer for Marvel Studios, penning hits such as Thor: Ragnarok and Black Widow — and writing upcoming features such as Thunderbolts* and Fantastic Four: First Steps. Along the way, he’s taking forays into other franchises, such as Godzilla vs. Kong, and most recently, he stepped into another storied universe with Transformers: One.
The animated feature tells how two best friends Orion Pax (Chris Hemsworth)and D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry) became mortal enemies known as Optimus Prime and Megatron.
Pearson spent weeks on the Paramount lot in a conference room near director Josh Cooley, working from an earlier script from fellow scribes Andrew Barrer Gabriel Ferrari. Among other things, Pearson focused on crafting an opening that made an exposition-heavy scene go down smooth, and took pride in pushing the limits of a PG rating.

Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson are two Marvel stars who went on to explore their fortunes in the Transformers franchise after their feats in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With fans used to seeing them part of blockbuster Marvel movies, which often gross more than an average film would, their venture into the world of Autobots and Decepticons has not been as easy.

This article contains massive spoilers for "Transformers One."
It's funny how long-lasting the "Transformers" series has been, having started out as a line of toys before evolving into a vast universe that has continued to tell exciting stories after 40 years — especially ones as varied as, say, the 1986 animated movie and the Michael Bay live-action adaptations. That being said, it's been a rough couple of years for the franchise as the live-action movies aren't the sure-fire box office hits they once were (but maybe the upcoming crossover with "G.I. Joe" will do the trick?).
Now, it's time for animation to save the franchise once again, because "Transformers One" is the best "Transformers" movie in decades. This is a movie that takes us back in time to tell a story inspired by biblical epics like "Ben-Hur" with a little "Revenge of the Sith" thrown in. But as good as the movie is,...

Plot: An origin story set on Cybertron focused on the friendship between a young Optimus Prime (Chris Hemsworth) and Megatron (Brian Tyree Henry) before they became arch-enemies.
Review: It figures that the best movie Paramount’s ever made from the Transformers franchise is animated. When I hit Comic Con in San Diego a few months ago, the folks behind Transformers One mentioned that by adopting an animated format, for the first time in the history of the big screen franchise, they were able to make a Transformers movie without any human characters, set 100% on Cybertron. It would have cost about $400 million had this been live-action. And, indeed, with no limit on the story’s scope, for the first time, we have a Transformers movie that can legitimately be called terrific.

After 17 years of big-screen Transformers mayhem, Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley appears to have finally figured out the best possible place and presentation for the robots in disguise, and as it turns out, that place is right back where they started: animation. Written by Eric Pearson, Andrew Barrer, and Gabriel Ferrari, Transformers One is, at heart, about sentient robots fighting aliens and each other for the fate of the technological utopia of Cybertron. No need to get poor John Turturro peed on again, or Mark Wahlberg to stare blankly at nothing on a green screen. A realm without physical limits is truly where the Transformers belong, but it doesn’t stop the film from delivering some surprising pathos while it’s there.
Indeed, Transformers One is, in itself, more than meets the eye. It seems like a simple, even frivolous, origin story at the outset, when we meet Orion...

The eighth theatrical film in Paramount and Hasbro’s Transformers series, Transformers One returns to the property’s purely animated roots. Yet, the story has more humanity than the films that co-star human actors, and ultimately makes you feel the operatic tragedy of Megatron.
In the early days of planet Cybertron, Orion Pax (voiced by Chris Hemsworth) and D16 (Brian Tyree Henry) are miners working in the depths of Cybertron for the transformative mineral energon. Energon has been in short supply since Primus, Cybertron’s creator, lost the Matrix of Leadership. Now, only half of the robots on Cybertron can transform. Pax and D-16 belong to the half that was born without transformation cogs.
Spoiler alert: Pax and D-16 eventually figure out how to transform — it is still called Transformers after all. Also spoiler alert: Pax and D-16 become Optimus Prime and Megatron, respectively — it’s clear from their designs.

"Transformers One" is the best movie in the "Transformers" franchise since the 1986 original. Director Josh Cooley ("Toy Story 4") and co-writer Eric Pearson ("Thor Ragnarok" "Godzilla vs. Kong") are experienced in big dramatic stories set in established franchises that appeal to nostalgia but are more than just walks down memory lane; movies that tell big and bombastic stories without becoming empty spectacle.
"Transformers One" takes us back, way before Sam Witwicky, before Optimus Prime arrived on Earth, even longer before Cybertron was destroyed. This is a time before Autobots and Decepticons, when Transformers didn't even have the ability to transform, but instead lived underground after a war ravaged the surface of their planet. The film tells the origin story of Optimus Prime, at this time known as Orion Pax (Chris Hemsworth) and Megatron, known back then as D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry). When Chris Hemsworth was presented with the challenge of playing a younger version of Optimus Prime in the animated film Transformers One, he probably thought to himself, “Roll out!” But that famous catchphrase, delivered by Peter Cullen since the original 1984 cartoon show, actually presented a challenge for Hemsworth as well.
“I don’t want to follow or mimic what Peter Cullen’s done,” the Australian recalls telling producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura when he was first offered the part. If he was going to step into another iconic character’s, err, wheels, he would need to make it his own. Fortunately, Hemsworth learned, Di Bonaventura didn’t want that either.

"Transformers One" has released its first trailer, finally giving the public the peek that CinemaCon attendees got last week. Directed by Josh Cooley, the film looks to offer a breezy and colorful animated adventure akin to the "Spider-Verse" films.
Does the title "Transformers One" sound like a misnomer to you? Audiences have already been subjected to eight of these movies and they're infamously not good ("Bumblebee" is innocent and 1986's "The Transformers: The Movie" barely skirts by on nostalgia despite how cynical it was). ControversyThe lead actor of the film came out in support of director Karthick Naren and asked Gautham Menon to grow a conscience. Tnm StaffThe spat between young filmmaker Karthick Naren and director and producer Gautham Menon just got bigger. Actor Arvind Swami, the lead star in Naragasooran, has come out in support of Karthick Naren. In his tweet, Arvind Swami hit back at Gautham Menon who'd said instead of "whining", young filmmakers should "grow a pair". Gautham Menon was responding to Karthick Naren's post on his social media pages which spoke of how his trust had been broken. https://t.co/6whl3aEczn While some young filmmakers whine about their passion getting butchered instead of growing a pair, here’s a young team that makes an interesting short about girls, women, cricket, Csk and liberation. What a https://t.co/dseipSKVrF very nicely done! — Gauthamvasudevmenon (@menongautham) March 27, 2018 Gautham Menon's caustic tweet prompted Karthick Naren to address him directly and say that he'd indeed shown courage by trusting Gautham Menon despite the warning he had received from others in the industry. While everybody advised against it I had the pair to trust you & collaborate sir. In return we were treated like trash & made to invest on our own. I think its better to whine & confront instead of running away. Please don't do this to any other young filmmaker sir. It hurts! https://t.co/05b4v7eSXg — Karthick Naren (@karthicknaren_M) March 27, 2018 Taking a jibe at the sexist phrase used by Gautham Menon, Arvind Swami said, "Yes we all can grow a few things, a pair of eyes that sees what we do to others, a pair of ears to hear the truth, a conscience to tell us when we are wrong and a pair of whatever to accept our mistakes and apologise...instead we grow our list of commitments that we can't keep." However, the young director said, Gautham Menon had used the title of producer to get funds for his own films Enai Noki Payum Thota and Dhruva Natchithiram which were announced a long time ago and are yet to hit the screens. Gautham Menon shared a video made by Fully, attacking Karthick with a commonly used sexist phrase - 'grow a pair': "While some young filmmakers whine about their passion getting butchered instead of growing a pair, here's a young team that makes an interesting short about girls, women, cricket, Csk and liberation." https://t.co/6whl3aEczn While some young filmmakers whine about their passion getting butchered instead of growing a pair, here’s a young team that makes an interesting short about girls, women, cricket, Csk and liberation. What a https://t.co/dseipSKVrF very nicely done! — Gauthamvasudevmenon (@menongautham) March 27, 2018 Karthick Naren was quick to respond to the jibe in the same vein. He retweeted Gautham Menon's stinging message with "While everybody advised against it I had the pair to trust you & collaborate sir. In return we were treated like trash & made to invest on our own. I think its better to whine & confront instead of running away. Please don't do this to any other young filmmaker sir. It hurts!" It hurts! https://t.co/05b4v7eSXg — Karthick Naren (@karthicknaren_M) March 27, 2018 In an interview to Sify, Karthick Naren said, "When I signed Naragasooran for Gautham Menon sir, everyone asked to reconsider my decision. But I had immense faith and admiration in Gautham sir and we started the shoot. Though Gautham sir’s Ondraga banner is associated with Naragasooran on paper, he hasn’t invested anything into our project. What really hurt me is that he has gone ahead and borrowed money pledging my film (Naragasooran) and invested in his own films —Dhruva Natchathiram and Enai Noki Paayum Thota. The main issue now is that Gautham sir has to settle the remuneration of Arvind Swamy sir and other actors. Though Arvind sir is sweet enough to dub the film for me, I don’t want to take him to be taken for granted”. Karthick also added, “I invested all the money that we earned from Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru in Naragasooran and when Ondraga Entertainment says that they are associated with my film, they shouldn’t back out but in reality, they haven’t spent anything for us. Naragasooran is actually funded by Badri Kasthuri sir’s Shraddha Entertainment and me, but financiers who gave money to Gautham Menon are targeting our project. When we tried to reach Gautham through phone calls and messages, he didn’t have the courtesy to respond so I had no other option. Someone has to bell the cat”. Naragasooran stars Arvind Swami, Shriya Saran, Sundeep Kishan, Indrajith and others. The film's production began in the latter half of 2017 and it was supposed to release in May 2018. Karthick Naren had earlier said that it was the second in the D16 trilogy. The first film, Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru, which marked his debut, went on to win critical acclaim and did well at the box-office. Gautham Menon has been accused of starting projects and taking a really long time to complete them. A Facebook page titled 'Unofficial: Gautham Vasudev Menon' even keeps track of how delayed his projects like Dhruva Natchathiram and Enai Nokki Payum Thota are! With the young director and the producer of the film slugging it out publicly, it remains to be seen what will happen to Naragasooran. The teaser had set up expectations and it will be disappointing if the film doesn't make it to the screens. The people who made the Fully video, at any rate, have received more attention with the spat. Thank you guys for fighting with the link of our video Xd https://t.co/xX6J3sxqZ2 — Kishen das (@kishen_das) March 28, 2018 Meanwhile, the Tamil film industry is continuing with its strike against DSPs and has refused to reconcile to the new terms offered by them unlike the other three south Indian film industries. Shooting has also been stopped although a few films have received special permission, raising questions among other producers about the 'partiality'.

Looks like chances are high for director Gautham Menon and actor Sundeep Kishan to team up for a movie very soon.
Reports from tinsel town say that both Gautham as well as Sundeep discussed working together and that the project may materialise once their current assignments are wrapped up.
Incidentally, the two met on the sets of Naragasooran, which is being produced by Gautham Menon under his banner and directed by Karthik Naren of Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru fame.
