This year’s honors will be distributed on Feb. 15 during a ceremony hosted by comedian and actress Rachael Harris at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown. (See the complete list of names below.) Final voting for guild members opens on Jan.

The Art Directors Guild has announced the nominees for its 29th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards. Production design is all about worldbuilding, and so it’s fitting that the nominees are spread out by the kinds of worlds production designers are asked to create and the demands of their setting. The feature film nominee categories are amongst period settings, contemporary settings, and fantasy settings and the television shows are divided further by format between single-camera hourlong, half-hour, multicamera series, limited series, and TV movie, among others.
But the nominees themselves align with IndieWire’s predicted frontrunners for the Oscar category. “Dune: Part Two” and “Wicked,” among others, are nominated in the fantasy feature film category, while “The Brutalist,” and “Conclave” each received nominations in period feature and contemporary feature, respectively. On the TV side, “Shōgun” continues its conquest of guild nominations with one for period single-camera series, but “Squid Game,...

Carry-On, a film about traveling through the airport at Christmas, is on course to break into Netflix’s top ten films of all time.
The thriller, which stars Taron Egerton, Jason Bateman, and Sofia Carson, bested its performance last week by adding another 55M views on top of last week’s 42M number. It remains number one on Netflix’s weekly film charts, having already become Netflix’s biggest launch of a film this year.
Given that it has scored 97M views in its first ten days, Carry-On, which was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and produced by Amblin Partners, it could well enter Netflix’s top ten films of all time. Why was it argued that Gabriel García Márquez’s 1967 literary masterwork “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is un-filmable and anti-cinematic, while the novel is one of the most picturesque pieces of literature ever written? One can hardly finish this 422-page novel without bypassing the images it evokes. I assume, the reason behind this ‘un-filmability’ or ‘un-adaptability’ lies in the kaleidoscope of realism that stems from Gabriel García Márquez’s life and works.
Once, while delivering a lecture on García Márquez at the Harry Ransom Center, Salman Rushdie remarked that, while reading García Márquez’s works, his readers’ often, enchanted by the ‘Magic,’ overlook the ‘Real.’ This magic of Gabo, which at times overshadowed the real, is perhaps one of the key reasons for making it look like cinema or television is inefficient in adapting his texts. But, García Márquez, who throughout his life was inextricably involved with cinema, himself did...

One Hundred Years Of Solitude, the magnum opus by Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel García Márquez, simply should not work on screen. Even with the blessing of the writer's family, recapturing the essence of his landmark achievement seems even more impossible than the mystical occurrences that unfold in the book's fictional town of Macondo. Yet capture it they have — and remarkably better than anyone could have hoped for.
Shot in the Spanish language, using a Colombian cast, Netflix's highly anticipated adaptation is one of the largest productions in Latin American history, befitting the multi-generational story beating at the heart of the book's prose. The lavish production, shot on a town-sized set specifically constructed for this show, smartly evolves over time as we travel through history with the Buendía family. Historical realism and mythic surprises ebb and flow as the family's saga rises and falls, encompassing...

Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s magnum opus, One Hundred Years of Solitude, is famously regarded as the single most important piece of literature in the Spanish language since Don Quixote, and the recently released Netflix TV series adaptation of the seminal novel shows us precisely why. Chronicling an epic saga set in the fictional town of Macondo revolving around several generations of the Buendía family, which touches upon a myriad of themes ranging from human emotions, the cyclical nature of time, imagination, legacy, religion, and existential crisis—the nature of life itself—One Hundred Years of Solitude proves itself as a timeless classic, the universal tone of which will keep it relevant and appealing through ages to come. It’s a veritable microcosmic journey of human civilization that begins with new discoveries, wonders, explorations, and gradually adapts darker undertones of outside interventionism, violent politics, hatred, and conflict—harboring the...

The first part of Netflix’s TV series adaptation of One Hundred Years of Solitude highlighted the growth of the Buendía family, which became synonymous with the prosperity of the city of Macondo. Hidden in the swampy wilderness, Macondo was as free and liberated as its founding family wanted the city to be. But eventually, as the bitter realities of the outside world started pressing into the mystical city, it started to transform into a troubled, war-ravaged version of itself and the Buendia family’s downfall almost started in synchronization as well. By the end of the first season, the city and its founding family have changed into something unrecognizable when their past is taken into context. Although the story hasn’t ended yet, as a second part consisting of eight more episodes is to be released next year, it doesn’t seem either the city or the family will...

As a period drama, One Hundred Years of Solitude is epic in scale in the way it charts the growth and eventual decline of the fictional city of Macondo and, by extension, the Buendia family as well. Within the first part of the series, consisting of eight episodes, we have reached the fourth generation of the Buendía family, and for viewers, it can be a daunting task to keep track of the family connections given the promiscuous tendencies of the men of the family, which have led to more children being born out of wedlock than in it. Viewers who are familiar with the source material already know that the family tree will become much more confusing in the final part with new members adding on in each generation. To avoid mixing up the family dynamics among the members of the Buendia family, let’s take a look at the...

For a novel that has been claimed difficult to adapt in a live-action setting, Netflix proved that time solves everything – at least with how they handled Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude. Many Hollywood filmmakers have attempted to translate the 1967 Nobel Prize-winning story to the screen, but it was only today that an adaptation has been successfully made.

Netflix’s 2024 drama series, One Hundred Years of Solitude, is a fascinating adaptation of Nobel Prize-winning writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel by the same name. Based on the first half of the book, the Netflix’s series follows the Buendia family as their foundations are laid in the new town of Macondo, up until the death of the patriarch, Jose Arcadio Buendia. Both because of its faithful adaptation of the novel and also the grand scale of production, One Hundred Years of Solitude part 1 is a thoroughly entertaining watch.

Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez’s 1967 magnum opus, “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” has long been considered one of the greatest works of modern literature. However, during Márquez’s life, he refused to sell the rights to the novel because he felt a film adaptation would not come close to scratching the surface of this century-long tale. Now, with the blessing of his sons Rodrigo García and Gonzalo García Barcha, who serve as executive producers, Netflix has adapted the sweeping masterwork into a two-part limited series spanning over 16 hours of television. (Netflix hasn’t yet announced when Part 2 will premiere.) With directors Alex García López and Laura Mora at the helm for Part 1, “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is exquisitely detailed and layered in intricate symbolism. The show is one of the most faithful page-to-screen adaptations in recent years.

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Márquez is a monumental work in the literary realm. Its pages are alive with the magic of memory, the weight of history, and the delicate dance of fate—a tapestry woven with threads of love, loss, and a real longing.
As I settled in to watch Netflix’s adaptation, I felt a familiar flutter of anxiety: how do you transform the ineffable beauty of Márquez’s words into a visual medium? The novel’s popularity is almost heavenly, revered not only for its narrative complexity but also for its significant impact on the landscape of magical realism. It’s a towering achievement that makes many adaptations feel like pale shadows of the original—a formidable challenge that this series must carefully navigate.
Márquez famously opposed film adaptations of his writings, claiming that no film could capture the depth of his vision. And yet,...

Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez’s masterpiece “One Hundred Years of Solitude” — an elliptical epic of fate, family, politics and madness in Macondo, a fictional town that represents the wider, tragic history of Colombia and Latin America as a whole — has been made into a Netflix series.
That’s Netflix; the streaming service better known for “Squid Game,” “Tiger King” and the more overpriced works of Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes.
Bad idea, right? Well, to further quote that other prizeworthy wordsmith Olivia Rodrigo, “f—k it, it’s fine.”
More than fine, actually. The first season of this two-part, Spanish-language production can come across at times like a highbrow telenovela. But the sweeping pageant does an impressive job of streamlining García Márquez’s idiosyncratic, discursive novel into an expeditious but still thoughtful, contemplative and, yes, realistically magical eight hours.
The author’s sadness and humor come across intact; the...

Three years ago, Max released a limited series adaptation of a well-regarded novel that blended magic realism and an all-too-real snapshot of a global pandemic. Dreamy and uncomfortably familiar, bleak and yet bursting with hope, Patrick Somerville’s translation of Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven has settled into a reputation as a modern classic — THR placed it at No. 42 on our list of the 50 Best TV Shows of the 21st Century So Far — but owing to the timing of its premiere, the show was initially a little lost. It missed deadlines for many critics’ Top 10 lists and didn’t attract the awards attention you might expect based on its subsequent acclaim. It had to take a long path to adoration.

You won’t have to wait 100 more years for Netflix’s adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s classic novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude” — the two-part series premieres on December 11. Each part is eight episodes.
“One Hundred Years of Solitude” (the book) was published in 1967; Márquez won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982. The novel has sold more than 50 million copies and has been translated into more than 40 languages.
“One Hundred Years of Solitude (the series) was entirely filmed in Colombia with the support of the Márquez family. Like the book, it follows cousins José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula Iguarán who are married against their parents’ wishes.
“Accompanied by friends and adventurers, their journey culminates with the founding of a utopian town on the banks of a river of prehistoric stones that they baptize Macondo,” the Netflix synopsis reads. “Several generations of the Buendía lineage will mark the future of this mythical town,...
