What to Know

  • Launch-model PS5 (CFI-1000): Position the console on its side. Grip the corner with the PS logo and pull up and to your left.
  • PS5 Slim (CFI-2000): Put the console on its side with the front facing you. Remove the feet, and then lift the panels straight up and back.
  • You'll remove covers to clean, replace the panels with a new color, or install a new hard drive.

This page will walk you through the process of removing a PlayStation 5's covers and show you how to put them back on when you’re done. Instructions apply to both launch and Slim versions of the PS5.

Before You Take Off a PS5 Cover

Before removing your PS5’s faceplates, it’s important to fully power down your console by going to the control center and selecting Power > Turn off PS5. Next, remove all cables and stands (if necessary) and wait a few minutes for the console to cool down.

Once that’s done, you’re ready to remove the covers.

If you’re unsure what PS5 model you have, you can find it on the back of the console. For more information, check out the official PlayStation website.

How to Take Off the Cover of the Launch PS5

If you bought a PlayStation 5 at launch–or anytime between then and November 2023–these are your instructions. To confirm, look on the back of the console for the model number, which will be CFI-1000.

  1. Place the PS5 on a flat surface with the PS5 logo positioned at the top right.

  2. Grab the top-right corner, lift up, and slide the entire top panel to your left. It’s a bit of an awkward movement, so it may take a few attempts to get it right.

  3. To re-attach the same cover or install a new one, slide it on from right to left. You’ll hear a click when the cover is back in place (you may need to push down a bit to get it to “click” into place).

  4. Flip the console over so that the power button (front) is facing toward you. If your PS5 has a disc drive, it should also be pointing toward you.

  6. To re-attach, slide the cover from right to left until it clicks into place.

To clean the console, it’s best to use a microfiber cloth, isopropyl alcohol, and some canned air to remove dust and debris from difficult-to-reach areas. For cleaning best practices, check out our PS5 cleaning guide.

How to Remove the Covers From a PS5 Slim

Unlike the original model, the PS5 Slim’s covers lift in a different direction. However, the removal process is similar. The model number of the Slim version of the PS5 is CFI-2000.

  1. Place the console on a flat surface with the feet down and the front side facing toward you.

  2. Remove the feet from the PS5.

  3. The PS5 Slim has four different cover plates, each with a symbol corresponding to the four action buttons on the DualSense controller (X, Square, Circle, and Triangle). You remove them all the same way.

  4. Grab a cover from the bottom (closest side to you) and lift up and away. The cover should detach from its clips, and you can pull it slightly toward you to finish removing it.

  5. To re-attach the cover or install a new one, align the cover’s clips with the corresponding holes on the front and back of the PS5 and push in until you hear a “click.”

Why You'd Remove a PS5 Cover

The three main reasons to remove a PS5's covers are to clean it, upgrade the hard drive, or replace the plates with a new color.

In the third case, you can pick up new console covers in a variety of colors like red, pink, black, and blue. These plates are a quick, easy way to freshen up the default white look of the PlayStation 5.
