Grenchen is nestled in greenery on the southern Jura slope, between the Grenchenberg and the Witi - a technology town in the countryside. The idyllic recreational areas, optimal accessibility and excellent quality of services make the Grenchen region an attractive and popular place to live.

Thanks to the A5 highway, the town is free from transit traffic and yet easily accessible from all over Switzerland. Two railroad stations, Grenchen Süd and Grenchen Nord, provide connections to the intercity and regional networks. The BGU bus network connects the residential districts with the two railroad stations, the town center and the region.

Urban residential options can be found in the center and west of the town. Residential areas with a high proportion of owner-occupied properties and views over the entire Mittelland are located mainly in the north of the city, on the southern slope of the Jura. Right next to the city center, on a small hill around Gibelstrasse, are factory-owners' villas from the city's early days. The agricultural hamlet of Staad is located on the Aare.

A population survey conducted in 2007 revealed that the people of Grenchen are very satisfied with their residential areas. Residents feel safe and a majority perceive the city as open and modern.
