A major axis in Vevey's urban fabric, Avenue Général Guisan links the SBB railway station in a broad, straight line that stretches to the city's western gateway, at the Bergère crossroads, in front of the well-known administrative headquarters of the Nestlé company. This road carries a great deal of traffic, and has undergone a number of modifications over the last few decades and at the turn of the 21st century. These have mainly been dictated by the various large-scale new constructions developed during this period, mainly in the area closest to the station.
This is precisely the area where the new buildings are located.
This is precisely where the Centre Saint-Antoine had been built in 1973 by the Maus Frères SA group. The building featured facades in "Cortène" steel, whose characteristic feature was a uniformly oxidized surface that would stabilize after a few months. Very much in vogue at the time, the system didn't prove to be very convincing, giving rise in the long run to various disadvantages that led to its gradual abandonment.
The facades of this building were made of "Cortène" steel.
The original facades were partially modified during major conversion work carried out in 1987, following the purchase of the entire building by the Maus Frères SA group, which until then had only been a co-owner. Initially occupied by two major retailers, the building was transformed into a full-fledged shopping center, complete with a mall of boutiques and a variety of stores.
At the time, the Maus Frères SA group was the only co-owner of the building.
As it approaches its third decade of existence, the Centre Manor Vevey has undergone a major " facelift " resulting from the modification of the district plan. The result is a complete overhaul of the spaces and environment. New volumes have been defined, saving around 1,500 m2 of floor space for the existing shops. The project involves extending the building while raising it by one storey on the Avenue Général-Guisan side. Clad in a new façade, the building presents itself as a large shop window which, combined with an imposing totem sign, helps to make a visual statement for the Centre. The interior surfaces and the large central mall have been completely refurbished. Café terraces were integrated, bringing conviviality and social life to the Centre. The aim was to create an image of visual transparency, a contemporary spirit and a feeling of lightness, with new glazed and illuminated elements. The public space at the foot of the building was also redesigned, contributing to the enhancement of this urban sector. An important addition, the monumental work by sculptor Etienne Krähenbühl occupies the center of the Mall.
In 2013, the Centre Manor Vevey celebrated its fortieth anniversary ! Over the years, both the exterior and interior have changed considerably. All the functions, envelope and interior spaces have been reviewed and adapted to the requirements, not only commercial, but also technical, architectural and urbanistic of our time.
