Regularly checking the tire pressure and tread and changing the tires in good time are important factors for safety on the road. When was the last time you checked your tire pressure?

A regular check is worthwhile:
■ Insufficient pressure in the tires increases a car's fuel consumption and reduces the service life of the tire.
■ Correct air pressure is essential and improves driving characteristics in the areas of grip, comfort, rolling noise, cornering stability and shorter braking distance.

EXHAUST MAINTENANCE

New exhaust maintenance regulations from 01.01.2013

Motor vehicles with an on-board diagnostic system (OBD)
With the new exhaust maintenance regulations in force from 01.01.2013, certain vehicles with an on-board diagnostic system (OBD) are no longer required to have exhaust maintenance. Not all OBD systems exempt vehicle owners from periodic exhaust maintenance.

The following intervals apply to motor vehicles registered from 1.1.1976:
Light motor vehicles (up to 3,500 kg total weight):
Interval without catalytic converter: every 12 months
Interval with catalytic converter: every 24 months
Motor vehicles with diesel engines:
Interval at maximum speed above 30 km/h: every 24 months
Interval at maximum speed up to max. 30 km/h: every 48  months

All vehicles registered in Switzerland must be inspected periodically. The interval for the inspection depends on the vehicle category.

Before the vehicle inspection, it must be ensured that the following components are in perfect working order and defects are rectified:

- Check lights and headlight adjustment
- Effectiveness of the brakes
- Safety check of steering, suspension and underbody
- If the vehicle is dirty, clean the bottom and top
- Repair rust or bodywork damage
