Buying advice
Buying advice - what to look out for when buying a motorcycle or scooter
When comparing the prices of various used motorcycles, there are a few important points to bear in mind that can greatly increase or decrease the value of the sale price. Because if you really want to buy the best motorcycle, not just the cheap one, then you should read the following information first.
Of course, these recommendations also apply if you want to exchange a motorcycle for a new one or simply sell it. We also have to pay close attention to these criteria every time we buy a vehicle so that it can be sold properly.
Contents:
1. first registration and model year, the age of the vehicle
2. mileage, the mileage
3. from service
4. new tires
5. from MFK / not from MFK
6. guarantees
7. ex place

9. import by official CH importer or parallel import

11. equipment / conversions
1. first registration and model year, the age of the vehicle
The 1st placing on the market (1st IV) and the model year/year of manufacture may be different, i.e. a motorcycle may have been registered for the first time in a later year than it was produced. This may be the case, for example, with vehicles that were driven with the garage number or with exhibition vehicles.
Example:
- Year of manufacture 2005
- Placed on the market (1st IV) March 2006
If there is no difference between the 2005 and 2006 model years/years of construction, this is not a problem.
Only if a vehicle has been with the importer and/or dealer for several years will the vehicle certainly have been sold at a lower price than a model with the latest year of manufacture when it is first sold. This can be determined under certain circumstances
- via colors, which vary depending on the model year
- with the customs clearance form 13.20
- with different equipment
- using the chassis number via the importer
2. mileage, the mileage
The odometer reading (i.e. the mileage of a motorcycle) certainly has the greatest influence on the price of a used vehicle.
In general, it can be observed that used motorcycles with a high mileage and therefore above the average are generally offered at too high a price.
3. from service
This definition can be interpreted very broadly:
From which service onwards?
a) Used car service: this usually includes a level check, possibly an oil change, tire pressure, check of all assemblies, test drive.
b) For service work according to factory specifications with certain intervals, e.g. 6000 km intervals (6000 km minor, 12000 km major service), it makes a difference whether a minor or major service has been carried out. This means that the value of the motorcycle is correspondingly higher, as a major service with spare parts and operating materials costs around CHF 600 to 800 (e.g. 4 cylinder 1000 cc), while a minor service costs around CHF 200 to 300.
On the other hand, if the next major service is only due in, say, 3000 km, there is of course no point in doing it in advance.
4. new tires
The term new tires should only be used if more than 90% of the tread of a new tire is still present.
Caution is advised if the motorcycle has already been standing around for a few years, as the tires may no longer meet the requirements depending on how they have been stored. The same applies to a vehicle that is 10 years old but has only covered 2000 km; the first tires are probably still fitted.
5. from MFK / not from MFK
According to the information on the Zurich Road Traffic Office website, vehicles must undergo a technical inspection/inspection at the following intervals:
Motorcycles must be inspected for the first time four years after they are first put on the market, then after three years, then every two years.
In the event of a change of owner, vehicles must be inspected if the last inspection was more than one year ago and the first registration was more than ten years ago.
The 1st IV (first placing on the market) and any subsequent inspections can be found in the vehicle registration document.
Example 1: 1st IV 20.5.2004
If you buy this motorcycle in January 2008, you can still ride it for about 5 months without having to present it.
Example 2: 1st IV 20.5.2000, last test May 2007, (4 years and 3 years, this can also be postponed depending on the workload of the road traffic office)
Next test is required in May 2009, if you buy this motorcycle in January 2008, you can still ride it for about 17 months without having to present it.
6. guarantees
There are different types of warranty promises:
a) a full warranty 1 to 12 months by the dealer
b) an extended factory warranty up to a certain date, which also corresponds to a full warranty.
c) Repair cost insurance, for example from Quality1 for 12 months.
This insurance may be included in the purchase price, but you can also take out such insurance with most dealers at your own expense. This type of warranty specifies exactly which components are covered by the warranty.
Never included in the warranty are all wearing parts, tires, service work, etc., and of course defects caused by your own fault.
A 12-month warranty corresponds approximately to a value of CHF 300 to 400 (example for a motorcycle over 500 cc)
7. from place
A vehicle "ex works" is normally sold without warranty and "as seen". This has an effect on the price, they are usually older vehicles with a high mileage on the speedometer, in a poor condition, chain, sprocket and pinion worn, tires to replace, etc.
8. for sale by order
This means that the dealer assumes no responsibility for condition, warranty, etc.
9. import by official CH importer or parallel import
For some time now, parallel import (import of vehicles not from the official Swiss importer) has been permitted by law. It is therefore difficult to distinguish who actually imported the vehicle.
If there is an X in the vehicle registration document in the type approval / type certificate or if there is an X in the type approval number, the vehicle is usually a direct / or parallel import.
Example:
CH importer type approval 6HA286, parallel import type approval 6HX165
HA stands for import by the Swiss importer, HX for a parallel import.
Unfortunately, this is no guarantee that the vehicle was actually imported by the Swiss importer.
Therefore, when buying, make sure that the seller gives you a guarantee for service, repairs and spare parts procurement.
10. accident-free
The motorradhandel.ch definition of accident-free for motorcycles means accident-free.
This means that a motorcycle that has been damaged in an accident can be made as good as new by "replacing" (not repairing) all damaged/deformed parts: the motorcycle no longer has any parts damaged or deformed by an accident, no straightening work has been carried out.
This is in contrast to a car, which may have structural damage after an accident. If this damage is reshaped, the vehicle still remains an accident vehicle.
A motorcycle with straightened, unreplaced parts remains an accident vehicle, just like a car.
11. equipment / conversions
There is a whole range of useful or very popular accessory or equipment items here.
Examples:
ABS, navigation, side cases, leather bags, special silencer, top case, windscreens, seat/grip heating
Side cases/top cases, for example, can increase the value by a good CHF 500, depending on age, as the new price of side cases/top cases can be over CHF 1000. This equipment has a strong influence on the value of a vehicle.
If modifications have been made, make sure that they are legal and suitable for demonstration (or that at least the original parts are present!). In the case of certain modifications, the changes must be entered in the vehicle registration document, otherwise you will have major difficulties in the event of a police check.
