Mariners add another right-hander named Luis Castillo (source)
The Mariners are cornering the market on right-handed pitchers named Luis Castillo.
Seattle reached a Minor League deal with 29-year-old Luis Felipe Castillo on Tuesday, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The club has not confirmed the deal, which includes a Spring Training invite.
He’s not to be confused with 32-year-old Luis Miguel Castillo, who has pitched for Seattle since the club acquired him from the Reds prior to the 2022 Trade Deadline.
The Mariners’ newest Castillo spent the past two seasons in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball, posting a 3.01 ERA with 108 strikeouts and 21 walks over 143 1/3 innings. He has three games of MLB experience under his belt, all with the Tigers back in 2022. Coincidentally, he made his big league debut on Aug. 6 of that year, just three days after the other Luis Castillo made his first start for the Mariners following the trade.
Luis F. Castillo will look to earn a spot on the big league club during Spring Training, though it remains to be seen if he’ll end up pitching alongside Luis M. Castillo, who has been involved in trade rumblings this offseason.
