A northwest Indiana man was shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop days after he was pardoned by President Donald Trump for a misdemeanor related to the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot.

The DOJ employees had been involved in special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation that led to Trump’s classified documents and Jan. 6 cases.

President Donald Trump’s decision to pardon virtually every person charged in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol was made at the last minute as the inauguration approached — and it surprised some of his supporters and aides. 

Waves of people imprisoned for crimes at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, were released from D.C.’s jail to cheers late Tuesday after President Donald Trump pardoned them on his first day back in office.

Trump issued “a full, complete and unconditional pardon” to people punished for their involvement in the 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, including those who assaulted law enforcement officers.

“The fact that I have to do this, to try to afford my family some degree of protection, is outrageous,” Fanone said. “But we are in an age of government lawlessness.”

Some Republicans on Capitol Hill were particularly critical of the pardons for those convicted of assaulting police officers, while others declined to defend Trump’s move.
