Do All 1911 Magazines Fit All 1911?
Yes and no. Of course, different calibers will require the appropriate magazines. As long as they’re the correct caliber for the 1911 handgun, they usually are compatible as long as the size corresponds. For example, a full-size 1911 Government Model won’t take a compact or subcompact magazine because they’re not long enough. However, many times a compact or subcompact can use a full-size magazine, although it will extend below the grip, making it awkward for a carry gun, and sometimes will result in feeding issues. There are also some double-stack 1911 magazines that may not fit or function in your 1911.
Wilson Combat 1911 Elite Tactical Magazines (ETM) are highly regarded for fit and function in nearly all 1911 pistols.
What is the Highest-Capacity Magazine for a 1911?
Although there are some 1911 magazines that are very high-capacity (28rd, 40rd, or more) drum mags, they are very unwieldy, heavy, and difficult to use. Something like that is really only for mag dumps at the range and is pretty impractical for most other applications.
There are also 15-round and 20-round stick magazines, which are easier to use than drum mags but still extend so far from the grip of the handgun that they’re impractical for a carry gun. Most 45 ACP 1911 carriers stick a standard 7-round magazine, although 45 ACP 8-round magazines are also very popular. Many also find that a 9-round magazine or 10-round magazine still have a good fit and function in most 1911s.
What is the Standard-Capacity 1911 Magazine?
The standard 1911 magazine is a 45 ACP 7-round magazine. Different calibers will have higher capacities, especially 1911 platforms chambered in 380 ACP, 9mm Luger, and other calibers that are smaller than 45 ACP.
