What Tools Are Needed for a Gunsmith?

Some popular Gunsmithing Equipment include:

  • Lathes: used to cut and shape metal parts, such as barrels and receivers.

  • Milling Machines: These are used to machine and shape metal parts, such as trigger guards and slides.

  • Drill Presses: These are used to drill holes into metal parts, such as for scope mounting or attaching accessories.

  • Surface Grinders: used to grind and finish metal surfaces to a high level of precision.

  • Jigs and Fixtures: Are used to hold parts in place while being worked on, such as during welding or machining.

  • Presses: These are used to press parts together, such as for fitting barrels or installing sights.

  • Hand Tools: such as hammers, pliers, screwdrivers, and files, are used for various tasks, including assembling and disassembling firearms, fitting and adjusting parts, and making repairs.

  • Precision Measuring Tools: such as calipers and micrometers, are used to ensure that parts are machined to the correct dimensions.

  • Gunsmithing-Specific Tools: such as chamber reamers, headspace gauges, and barrel vise blocks, are used for specific tasks related to gunsmithing, such as reaming chambers and fitting barrels.

What Size Torque Wrench for Gunsmithing?

The size of the torque wrench that you will need for gunsmithing depends on the specific tasks you will be performing and the fasteners you will be working with. Generally, a torque wrench with a range of at least 20-200 inch-pound (in-lbs) will be sufficient for most gunsmithing tasks.

However, it is important to note that different fasteners on a firearm may require different torque values. For example, the torque values for scope base screws are generally in the range of 15-25 in-lbs., while the torque values for action screws can be as high as 65 in-lbs. It is important to consult the manufacturer's specifications for the correct torque values for each specific fastener.

In addition to a torque wrench, you may also find it helpful to have a torque screwdriver or torque adapter, which allows you to apply a specific torque value to a fastener using a standard screwdriver or drill. These gunsmithing tools can be especially useful for tasks such as attaching scope bases, where the torque values are relatively low, and a torque wrench may not be necessary.

What Is a Sight Pusher Tool?

A sight pusher tool is a specialized tool for installing and removing front and rear sights on firearms. It typically consists of a metal frame with two jaws that can be adjusted to fit around the sight and a handle or lever that applies force to push the sight in or out of place.

Sight pusher tools are designed to allow for precise and controlled movement of the sight to be accurately aligned and secured. They are especially useful for installing or removing dovetail sights commonly found on handguns and rifles.

There are various sight pusher tools available on the market, ranging from manual hand-held tools to more advanced hydraulic or pneumatic models. Some of these gunsmith tools are designed to work with a specific type of firearm or sight, while others are more versatile and can be used on a variety of guns.
