In 2023, the European Union produced 49.7 megatons of hard coal. Hard coal production has slowly decreased across the region, with Poland the only major producer remaining. Lignite is the most common coal type currently mined across Europe. The total coal production in the EU stood at 273.5 megatons in 2023.
